Blog Tour: Cipher

Cipher by: Cindi Madsen
Ebook: 325 Pages
Releases: July 22nd, 2013
Links: Goodreads / Amazon / BN / Kobo

Synopsis Summer Davis sees deaths before they happen. She attempts to live a normal life by focusing on the dance team and her quarterback boyfriend. But then the way-too-cheery Angel of Death shows up and tells her she’s a Cipher—a person chosen to help people who are going to die resolve problems with their loved ones. Ashlyn Moore, one of Summer’s classmates, is going to die, and she needs Summer’s help before that happens.

It’s nearly impossible to get through to Ashlyn, who surrounds herself with chess nerds and geeks and makes it clear she doesn’t want to be friends. Desperate to complete her Cipher task before it’s too late, Summer turns to Troy, the guy who’s always been there for her and one of the few people she can trust. With his help, she makes progress. In fact, the closer she gets to Ashlyn and her friends, the more she feels like she’s finally found where she belongs.

As the clock starts running down on Ashlyn’s life, Summer decides to change her objective. She’s going to save her new friend before it’s too late—even if it means messing with fate.

Cindi Madsen sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting revising, and falling in love with her
characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children. She is the author of YA novels All the Broken Pieces and Demons of the Sun, adult contemporary romances Falling for Her Fiancé and Act Like You love Me, and the women's fiction novel Cinderella Screwed Me Over.

- Review -

I absolutely have loved every book I've read by Cindi Madsen, and Cipher is no exception. When I read the synopsis I was expecting a different story than I got, but the story I got was one I absolutely adored and way better than I was hoping for. With romance, laughs, best friends, family, bittersweet moments, and supernatural elements this book definitely has a little bit of everything.

One of the best things to me is when you see the main character change from being one person in the beginning to a different person in the end. When they change to a better version of them self. That's exactly what Summer does. Summer starts off with what looks like "a perfect life", but it's really not perfect and Summer really isn't as happy as she seems. I loved watching Summer return to "herself", figure out who her real friends are, and ultimately be a happier better version of Summer.

Not going to lie, I wanted things to move a lot farther, shall I say, with Troy, but then I realized its a series and I was like oops, never mind. There's more books to make babies during.... I mean... Just kidding. So we have two "major" boys in Cipher, even though I think there's no competition between them at all, Cody and Troy. Cody is sweet and good-looking but pushy in all the wrong ways. Then there's Troy. Troy you adorable boy you. Everyone loves Troy, he's that always-smiles-plays-drums-super-sweet-sexy boy. You cannot help but love Troy, and I cannot wait to see where Summer and his relationship goes.

I really have to commend Cindi for how she ended the book. I honestly don't think most authors would have gone in the direction she went. Cindi didn't take the easy way out, but ended the book how she saw it ending which actually took me by surprise and I was impressed. I personally loved the ending. It was very bittersweet but at the same time it made me so excited for book two, Rift. Absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what Cindi Madsen book I can get my hands on next... I may just have to nicely beg for Rift. If you're thinking of picking this one up... I say definitely!

Because Cindi is AWESOME she's giving away at $20 iTunes card and a Paramore bracelet (US only)!!

Update: A little bit of everything

Hi lovelies,

This is officially my first post from my new Macbook! I already love it, I just have to figured out how I want to transfer all my documents, music, etc. over because when I tried over Wifi it jumped from 36 hours to 78.... yeah, no.

So, next, I want to say I'm sorry I've been away. At first it was just a book slump, but unfortunately now I'm dealing with some personal issues that I really wish I wasn't. Alas, I guess it's something everyone goes through, but it definitely sucks while it's happening to you. I do miss all my lovely blog followers and stalkers though!

I also want to apologize to all the publishers or authors who have expected things from me recently. Whether it was a review I didn't get a chance to post, a blog tour where I had to change my post, or just for not being as supportive as I normally am. I miss you and love the book world so much that I hate disappointing anyone in it. So, I'm sorry.

Next on the agenda, whilst in this "slump", I missed my 3 year blog anniversary. It was Monday July 15th! The 15th marked three years for my blog. And, as you all know I normally like to throw some kind of giveaway for my followers for continuing to stick by my blog over all this time. Unfortunately I'm still not in the mind frame to do that, but when I am I will have some giveaway for all you lovelies who continue to support me on a daily basis.

So, I'm not going away, but I will most likely only be posting sporadically until I feel like my normal happy-go-lucky Jena self.

Thank you to all my followers, friends, authors, publishers, and blog-stalkers (ha!) for sticking by my blog and I for so long. I miss the book world and I'm going to try to be back soon! Especially since I have this awesome new toy to write my posts on (joking... maybe not)!

Wishing everyone the best,

Jena

Blog Tour: Stripped

Stripped by: Brooklyn Skye
Released: May 14th, 2013
Links: Goodreads | Amazon

Synopsis: “I like you.” His voice is low and soft, which I don’t deserve. I look away, down the rutted parking lot. “Don’t... waste those words on me.” He touches my cheek. “You just need someone to show you.” “No.” I ease back again. “I don’t. So please, Torrin, stop trying to swoop in and save me. I don’t need saving.”

College freshman Quinn Montgomery will do anything to avoid the mistake her sister made—killing herself over a boy. But when she is forced into nude modeling at a local college to support her family after a bankruptcy, she begins to crack, just enough to let Torrin, the university’s top varsity oarsman, see that the real Quinn is not as feisty and unapproachable as she wants everyone to think. But letting someone in comes at a steep cost and, it turns out, Torrin is connected to Quinn’s family in more ways than she could ever imagine.

Brooklyn Skye grew up in a small town where she quickly realized writing was an escape from small town
life. Really, she’s just your average awkward girl who’s obsessed with words. Her Best Selling New Adult debut, STRIPPED, is out NOW! Represented by Bree Ogden of D4EO Literary Agency.

- Excerpt -

With the breeze, I can smell the boy to my left. A muted combination of Right Guard and sweat. I hate to admit it, but he smells good.

I take another drag of my cigarette and watch him. Face completely relaxed, it's obvious he enjoys the warm sun and rhythmic scuffling of shoes. After a minute, his lips twitch up at the corners.

"Get out your phone." His voice is low, husky. I pull in a long drag, letting the smoke stream out of my nose.

"Why?"

He shrugs, eyes still closed.

"So you can take a picture." He licks his lips, cracks a smile. "Then you can stare at me all night if you want. Fall asleep to the sight of my face."

I duck my head, look away, "Wow. Pretentious, are we?"

"You know you want to."

I snort. "Please."

He sits up, laughing, and extends his hand to me. "I'm Torrin." I just stare at it because people usually expect me to shake their hand and when I don't they get this stupid deer-in-the-headlights look and I find that amusing.

"Quinn."

Stupid look. One point for me. He scratches his temple.

"So, Quinn... is there a fashion trend I don't know about?"

"Fashion trend?" There's no way he's talking about me. I'm dressed completely normal - dark jeans and a cute striped sweater I stole out of Nikki's closet. So I glance at his outfit: faded jeans and a T-shirt with some undecipherable sports logo on the front. Typical guy outfit, same as Loyola boys wear when traipsing from class to class. I meet Torrin's gaze. He grins and points at my chest.

"Your sweater's on backwards."

Exclusive Excerpt!
Somewhere, James was just as trapped as I was.
I thought of the morning when we lay with each other, curled against one another, never beginning and never ending. How we’d stayed like that till the sun began to rise.
James had reached down and pulled me off the ground. He wore a satisfied grin on his face. “Someone is mighty proud of himself,” I teased.
He laughed. It bounced through the forest, calling it awake. Readying it for the day. “I’m just insanely happy.”
I stood on the tips of my toes and kissed him gently on his scar. “I’m insanely happy too,” I whispered.
James looked down at me, and I was lost all over again. I would never tire of looking into those mismatched eyes. They didn’t make him different. They made him him. He chuckled as he reached over and pulled a leaf from my tangled hair. “They’ll know just by looking at you that we’ve been up to no good.”
“No good?” I purred. “I thought it was very, very good.”
James growled and lifted me into the air. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he pressed his lips hungrily against mine. I moved my hands to his hair, curling my fingers into it, attaching myself to him. I never wanted to let go. Every part of me ached to be touched by him, and every part of me ached to touch him right back.
“Do you know how much I love you?” he breathed into the base of my neck. His lips fluttered against my skin.
I nodded, kissing the top of his head. “As much as I love you.”
James slowly put my feet back on the ground. He cradled my face in his hands. “That will never change. No matter what.”
I looked deep into his eyes. “I know.” Because I did. It was one of life’s few assurances. I would always love James.
I pressed my lips once again to his scar. “I adore this scar,” I whispered, unable to hide the smile that seemed etched on my face all morning.
“You’re enough to drive a man crazy,” he said The tremble of his voice caused my toes to curl. I wanted him again. And again. And again.
My fingers traced the waist of his pants. “Tonight?” I said, knowing full well it was a promise that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep.
James grabbed my hand and brought it to his lips. “Tonight,” he echoed.
As the sun climb higher into the sky, I knew our moment was coming to an end. James reached down and placed his hand over my heart. “Thank you,” he said.
“For what?” I asked, my voice choked with emotion.
            “For everything.”
As the memory slipped away, I looked back up at the night sky. Praying and hoping that James knew how much I wanted to thank him too.
            For everything.

About Tiffany:
Tiffany Truitt was born in Peoria, Illinois. A self-proclaimed Navy brat, Tiffany spent most of her childhood living in Virginia, but don’t call her a Southerner. She also spent a few years living in Cuba. Since her time on the island of  one McDonalds and Banana Rats (don’t ask), she has been obsessed with traveling. Today, Tiffany embraces popular Young Adult literature and uses it in her classroom. She currently teaches the following novels: The OutsidersSpeakNight, Dystopian Literature Circles: The Hunger GamesThe GiverThe Uglies, and Matched.

Book Blast: Never Too Far

Never Too Far
by Thomas Christopher
Kindle Edition, 272 pages
Published May 10th 2012 by Kalmaha Press

A harrowing story of love and survival.

In a future of scarce resources, where the possession of gas and diesel is punishable by death, a teenage boy and a pregnant girl must save their impoverished family. They risk their lives on a terrifying journey to sell stolen fuel on the black market.

Mary surprised Joe by knocking his arms away. She was stronger than she looked. Then she swept her legs off the bed and sprang to her feet. She took two steps and turned to face him as if to prove there was nothing wrong with her. But there was definitely something wrong. She wavered a moment. Her already white face turned ghostly. Her eyelids trembled. She seemed to realize she was becoming faint, and what that meant.

“I’m fine,” she said. “You don’t have to go.”

Joe got ready to catch her in case she fell, but somehow she held herself steady.

“It’s okay,” Joe said. “Just sit down. I will go find some food.”

Joe inched toward her. He was afraid to grab her again because she might try to wrench free once more and really fall. When she coughed, her little shoulders jerked and her round stomach jumped. Her head was drooped low and her hair hung down so he couldn’t see her face at all.

“Come on, lay down,” Joe said.

She didn’t move. Joe stepped toward her, but before he could put his arms around her, she tilted forward and rested the crown of her head against his chest. He slid his arms along the sides of her hard belly and around her waist. Then he shifted her toward the bed again. She moved like a bundle of empty sacks in his arms. He set her gently on the bed before he bent down to lift her feet onto the sheets.

After he sat in the chair, Mary asked him, “What if you don’t come back?”

“That’s not going to happen,” Joe said.

“How do you know?”

“I just know. You have to trust me.”
