Cover Reveal: While He Was Away Special Edition

While He Was Away
by: Karen Schreck

Book Blitz: The Crescent Chronicles

____________
- Flight Excerpt -

Preface

Closing my eyes, I tried to block it all out. Convinced I was about to die, I was only partly aware of his arms around me.

“You said you wanted an adventure,” he said quietly, teasingly, as he tightened his hold.

My stomach dropped out as an intense and complete feeling of weightlessness engulfed me. The wind stung my face as memories flooded my mind. I thought of my parents, of all the things I wanted to tell them but never did, my friends from home, and the experiences I longed for. Quickly my thoughts changed to more recent memories, to Levi.

“Open your eyes,” he whispered, somehow knowing my eyes were clenched shut.

Against my better judgment, I listened. The scream died in my throat as we hurtled toward the water that had seemed so beautiful from the roof above.

Blog Tour: FLAWED

_______________

- The Book -

About FLAWED: Sarah O’Brien is alive because of the pact she and her brother made twelve years ago—James will protect her from their violent father if she promises to never leave him. For years, she’s watched James destroy his life to save hers. If all he asks for in return is her affection, she’ll give it freely.

Until, with a tiny kiss and a broken mind, he asks for more than she can give.

Sam Donavon has been James’s best friend—and the boy Sarah’s had a crush on—for as long as she can remember. As their forbidden relationship deepens, Sarah knows she’s in trouble. Quiet, serious Sam has decided he’s going to save her. Neither of them realize James is far more unstable than her father ever was, or that he’s not about to let Sarah forget her half of the pact…

- Lets Chat :) -

- Hiiii Kate!!! :) happy to have my ROCKSTAR back on my blog again! How are ya?
I’m doing very well, thank you for asking! And thank you again for hosting me back on the Rockstar tour. You get me and I love that about you!

- Of course I get you! Dark Darlings forever! ...So Flawed (brilliant btw!) did you ever know any one like James or Sarah in your life?
Not really, no. With very rare exception, the characters in all of my books are figments of my imagination. As E.L. Doctorow once said, “Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia.”

- Oh! I like that quote!! What was your inspirations to write such a dark and emotional book?
I’ve always been fascinated by why people do the things they do, and think what they think. When I was a kid, one of my favorite games was listening for breaks in conversations, then trying to figure out how the person got from the last thing they said to the new topic. What could they have been thinking about that led them from point A (Starbucks makes the best frappucinos!) to point B (Hey, want to go see the new Ryan Gosling movie?). That kind of thing.

I’ve also always needed to understand abuse—specifically what leads someone to abuse someone else, how they justify what they’re doing, and how the person who loves you most has the potential to be the most toxic individual in your life. When the image of James hovering in the shadows watching Sarah popped into my head, I immediately knew what kind of book I had on my hands. It was the look in his eyes—the innocence, of all things—that inspired FLAWED.

- UNF. I love your mind, Kate. I love it.

- Favorite season? Why?
I’m a summer girl. It’s easier to cool off (jump into a pool, sit in front of a fan, drink ice cold applesauce from a glass…) than it is to warm up. Plus, I LOVE the beach.

- If you could go anywhere in the whole universe where would you go?
I don’t like to travel because traveling itself drives me nuts, but the second teleportation exists, I’m headed straight for somewhere with castles and ancient ruins. I’ve lived my whole life in a part of the country that doesn’t have much old stuff, so I feel like I’m missing out on a ton of history!

- If you could be any Disney princess which one would you be? Why?
This is a hard question! I’ve always had a soft spot for Cinderella’s story, but not Cinderella herself. So I think I’d want to be Ariel. Mostly because of the beach thing, her kickass singing voice, and because she’s always trying to learn stuff, but also because every boy I’ve met has been infatuated with her.

- Hell yeah for Ariel!

- So, um, how's Alex's project coming along? ;) Or any other projects you're working on?
The rumors are true! I’m working on a companion book to FLAWED that I’m calling BETRAYED, featuring Alex (James and Sam’s best friend) and Ashley Granger, a girl who has ties to what happened in book one—she just doesn’t know it yet. If you’ve read the book you’ll probably recognize her last name and guess the connection!

- *SCREAMS* I cannnnnooot WAIT!!!!!

Lightning round!
- Favorite color? BLUE
- Coffee or Tea? Neither, but I’ll take a bottle of water or some orange juice, please!
- Paranormal or Contemporary? Contemporary.
- Binder clips or Sharpies? (BAHAH! I had to)  Hypothetically speaking (because no way would anyone dare rob me of one or the other in real life!), I think binder clips would be more useful in the zombie apocalypse. So (again, hypothetically), I might be convinced to part with the Sharpies. Maybe.
- Eyes or Lips? Lips. But this is only because I’ve kissed enough boys with pretty eyes to know that they’d better have a nice set of lips if there’s going to be anything long term between us!

- Anything else you'd like to let us know?
I’ve been asked to write a sequel to FLAWED that shows Sarah off at college, dealing with the aftermath of what happened, finding love again, becoming her own person. I’m undecided. I’d love to hear what you guys think of the idea. Could you handle seeing Sarah move on? Or do you prefer to leave her story where it is, with any updates happening in Alex’s book?

- Personally, I actually am against a sequel. NOT that I wouldn't read it if there happened to be one. Even though it was tragic, I'm just happy where Sarah ended up and I honestly don't think I could handle seeing her moving on. But, I like the idea of her appearing in Alex's book!

- THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH Kate for stopping by. I love ya! You're welcome here any time!

About the Author

Jeanette Battista graduated with an English degree with a concentration in medieval literature which explains her possibly unhealthy fixation on edged weapons and cathedral architecture. She spent a summer in England and Scotland studying the historical King Arthur, which did nothing to curb her obsession. To satisfy her adrenaline cravings—since sword fighting is not widely accepted in these modern times—she rode a motorcycle at ridiculously high speeds, got some tattoos, and took kickboxing and boxing classes. She gave up the bike when her daughter came along, although she still gets pummeled at the gym on a regular basis.

When she’s not writing or working, Jeanette spends time with family, hikes, reads, makes decadent brownies, buys killer boots, and plays Pocket Frogs. She wishes there were more hours in the day so she could actually do more of these things. She lives with her daughter and their ancient, ill-tempered cat in North Carolina.

______________

I'll be honest--I wasn't planning to write a book like Leopard Moon. I had an entirely different story in my head at the time, but it just wasn't coming into clear focus. That's the funny way writing works though: there I am, sitting at a red light on my way to meet my friends for a birthday martini and pedicure, listening to Florence + the Machine and WHAM! The song Howl comes on and this whole lovely scene just starts unfolding in my head. There was Kess, running through the woods, ripping off of her clothes as she triggered a change into a black leopard. And there was Cormac, standing in a different part of the woods being beaten mercilessly by the villain. I didn't know Sek was going to turn out to be Kess' brother, but I did know who he was as a character and what he wanted.

It was truly a gift: the entire final fight scene just unspooled itself along with the song lyrics. Each beat of the song matched a key point in the fight. The more I listened, the more I realized that the lyrics could apply to all of the characters in the main triangle at some point in the story I suddenly wanted to tell. And I wanted that story to be more than just boy meeting girl--I wanted that story to be about girl saving boy, but more importantly about girl saving herself. The song Howl gave me Kess first and Sekhmet second, so a lot of what I tried to do with them was to show them as two halves of a whole, two sides of a coin. Howl, at least to me, wasn't a love song at all--it was a song about possession and obsession and all of those things that show up in our animal drives. that we'd like to forget exists.

So when I began to craft Kess and Sek, Howl played on a continuous loop. And though the song speaks of wolves, I knew these two had to be cats. Wolves have a more social nature and are more easily understood by us--I think it comes from them being a a precursor to our beloved dogs. Cats are an unknown quantity, strange and separate, even if they choose to share space with us. I wanted real darkness there, not just a brief bit of danger that would be easily resolved. Obsession and mental illness gave Sek that scariness, but also--I hope--a bit of sympathy. He really does love his sister and wants what is best for her and his clan. I never intended to excuse his behavior, but I did want to try and understand it.

Just like the song made me understand that narrator of that story. I can only hope I did half so well.

Review

Daynight was definitely a very imaginative and very creative book. It's a Dystopian at it's finest, that is for sure. I love how Megan created an alternative universe almost that is essentially earth, but yet completely different and way more controlled. I won't lie, I was confused at first with how much was going on, but when the book gets going.. it really gets going and definitely hooks you in for the ride.

Thoughts: Daynight was definitely a very imaginative and very creative book.

Our three main characters show up SCI/Thera for very different reasons. Kira will do anything for the full-ride scholarship she so desperately wants, so she agrees to go to SCI, but when she gets there it is nothing like she imagined. Blake knows all about SCI/Thera and is sent there to infiltrate it and bring it down from the inside. What he doesn't expect is to find qualities in Kira that make him re-think his decisions. Then there's Ethan, who's fallen for Kira right from the beginning but he's been born into an SCI elite family and he's been born with a heart defect. Two things that keep him forcefully away from Kira. These three quickly see that there is so much more going on at SCI than any of them could have imagined.

It's easy to see why Kira loved both Blake and Ethan... both boys are good-looking, protecting, and perfect in their own way. The world they live in is definitely dangerous and there is no mercy. I mean, if you have sex with someone, bang, that's it... they're your partner for life. I found myself leaning towards Ethan in this story though. When we meet Blake and get to know him I thought I was going to be all Blake but as you get to know him... he just felt ruthless to me and all for his cause versus looking out for Kira. Where with Ethan his love for Kira shines through everything as soon as they meet. This is one love triangle I definitely loved reading about.

Overall this book is very different and unique. The concept is original and actually quite scary at times. Some of the things in the book I couldn't believe were happening and there were constantly twists that I wasn't expecting. And, the ending makes you definitely want the next one.

Touch Of Frost by: Jennifer Estep

Synopsis: My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died...

Thoughts: So first off... Thank you to Erica from The Book Cellar for this fantastic recommendation because I absolutely loved this book. It was everything I was expecting and more! Once I started I honestly couldn't get enough of this book. The world is amazing. Mythos Academy is amazing. The characters are all brilliant in their own way. I absolutely loved Gwen right from the start and her story is purely addicting.

So the romance part... yeah well there isn't too much. Well, I take that back. There is a good amount of romance I just think most of it happens between the secondary characters. Which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, I think it was a smart move on Jennifer's part to not have Gwen rush into a hot and heavy romance knowing there's so much more ahead. That being said there is still Carson, who I absolutely loved and of course our hero hunk-a-sexy-boy Logan. Unf, I love that spartan and want so much more of him! He's one of those super strong bad boys yet you know there's so much more lurking beneath his exterior. And plus, with a story so good who needs a strong story line? There's a kick-ass main character.

Overall this story just flows so perfectly. Touch Of Frost is one of those books where you just HAVE to know what's coming next. It's thrilling and mysterious yet at the same time there's so many laughs. It's one of those books where you love every character for different reasons. Take Daphne for example... I thought she was going to be one of those characters I was going to have to hate, yet I ended up loving her in the end. That being said, the ending was definitely intense. I read this book from beginning to end without stopping and instantly bought book two. Loved, loved, loved it!

- Interview -

Hi CJ! Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for having me, Jena! You did a great job on your review the other day and I'm honored to be here.

Aw shucks, thank you!! :) Soo... are there any specific inspirations for writing Vanilla On Top?

Yes, but revealing too much will either alienate a huge amount of readers or may have others call me nasty names. LOL! In all honesty, I was driven to write this novel because I did not like what I was hearing in the press revolving around Fifty Shades of Grey. I have experienced mental and physical abuse in a previous relationship, and it is something people should run from, not toward. I wanted to write a story that showcased a healthy way to explore racy ideas in the bedroom, between two partners who respected each other while falling in love.

I see you've written lots of other books as well... Do you like writing Paranormal or Contemporary better?

Interesting question! Vanilla on Top was my first true romance. My paranormal titles have plenty of heat, but the main focus is the adventure and intrigue, not the relationship between the two protagonists. Writing a story without blood, violence, and action was a lot harder than I bargained for, that's for sure.
While I can't say I will write traditional romances for the rest of my career, I'm very excited to continue the Wild Side series. My publisher has given me the freedom to not follow the cookie-cutter mold readers see so much of in romances, and I'm incredibley grateful they are letting me write the stories inside me.

Where is your favorite place to write?

I've found it depends on my mood. If I'm feeling pressured at my desk (due to the piles of tasks waiting for me), I will often pack up and go write in a quiet corner in my bedroom, living room, or kitchen. My dogs will invariable follow me, serenading me with their snores.

What do you do outside of writing? Anything fun?

I'd love to rattle off a whole slew of exciting things, but the truth is I'm pretty focused on just a few things right now: getting healthy, writing, and my family.

We've started to watch more "grown-up" shows with our kids (like Elementary and Arrow), and take them to some PG-13 movies now, too. That's opened up a treasure trove of conversation topics for us to connect on. We like to travel in our camper during the summer and school holidays, which is also a nice way to keep us all grounded and together. As they get older (ten and twelve), my husband and I are acutely aware their friends are becoming more and more important and we're just the saps feeding them ;-) Making sure we all communicate and enjoy each other's company is a weekly challenge.

Do you have a favorite quote or lyrics (I love meaningful words!)?

Because I'm battling a lot of serious health concerns, the number one mantra that plays through my mind daily is, "Attitude is Everything." At the clinic I visit bi-weekly for treatments, I see people in walkers and wheelchairs, I see children who are mentally crippled from illness and unable to go to school, I see people crying after their recent doctor visit and ready to give up. I don't know when I will be better, but I know I will be one day. There is too much life has to offer to give up without a fight.

So inspiring :).

Lightning round!
- Coffee or Tea? Both! But I'm a nerd and all of it is caffeine free. If not, I'd never sleep.
- Black or White? I have two black dogs, one black cat, and two kids who like to camp. White has no place in my wardrobe!
- Faeries or Angels? Faeries.
- Hard copy or eBook? eBook all the way, baby!
- Bad boys or Sweet boys? Either. All I want is smart, funny, and self-reliant. He can be a nerd or a badass, I couldn't care less.
- Noise or silence? Depends. When I'm writing I prefer silence.

Anything else you'd like to let us know?

There are five books planned in the Wild Side series so far. Two more in the existing Brazen line introducing readers to new couples, and two more just for Tony and Heather that may be published by Entangled (If they don't want them I'll publish them on my own). I loved the couple so much I couldn't let them go after one book!

Thanks for stopping by CJ!! :)

- Hi Gina! Welcome to Shortie Says, glad to have you!! :)

Thank you for having me. Excited to be here!

- So, it seems all your books are sexy contemporaries... What draws you to write them?

I was always under the impression that I wrote contemporaries because my brain just didn’t do paranormal. Although that’s still the case, I’ve realized that I like writing about real life. I like adding that element of hope and fantasy to everyday situations.

- I also saw on Goodreads that you liked PARAMORE. Heck yes!!! Love them!! What other kind of music are you in to?

Haha Yes, Paramore. Although, I have to admit that I got a little turned off when they broke up *ducks* But I still like their music. I also love Maroon 5, The All-American Rejects, and I will admit that I love singing along to Glee.

- Ooooh Cupcake love! What's your favorite type? And, do you watch Cupcake Wars? I love that show!

My favorite cupcake is red velvet. I will eat anything if it’s covered in cream cheese icing. I’ve watched Cupcake Wars a few times but I don’t have much time to watch TV so I covet only a few shows. My must see TV, as in I will divorce my husband if the setting was ever skipped on the PVR, is Vampire Diaries LOL

- Where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is at a cafĂ© near my house. I’m there so often I never have to order my drink anymore. It’s started as soon as I walk in the door.

- Do you have a favorite quote or lyrics? Love them :)!

“Yeah, I wanna know you inside out
I'll spend my life trying to figure out
Just close your eyes and shut your mouth
And let me kiss you inside out.”
~ Kiss You Inside Out by Hedley

- I LOVE HEDLEY. YESSS.

Lightning Round!
- Vanilla or Chocolate? Chocolate
- Faeries or Wizards? Faeries
- Noise or Silence? When writing – noise!
- Lips or Eyes? Eyes
- Day or Night? Day (I like the sunlight)

- Anything else you'd like to let us all know?

Recipe for Satisfaction is the first of four books so stay tuned for more books over the next year. I also have a contemporary single title out in February. It’s titled A Taste of Trouble and is about….cupcakes! The heroine is the owner of a cupcake bakery and she has a sexy hero who may or may not be trouble.

- Oh!!! Four books? The brothers perhaps? ;) Cannot wait! Thank you so much for stopping by!! :)

Thank you!

- Review -

Recipe For Satisfaction had me in its grips as soon as I heard Jack Vaughn, tattoos, and a tongue ring. Yes ladies (and gents!) a sexy tongue ring! Oh no, but that's not all... our lead boy cooks too! I absolutely love a book that pulls me right in from the beginning with a lead character who's strong but looking for something, a sexy dream man, and yet a background story that perfectly weaves them together. Recipe For Satisfaction definitely fulfills all of those.

Recipe For Satisfaction by: Gina Gordon

Already a major success thanks to his exclusive restaurants, Jack Vaughn is looking for something more. Ultra responsible Sterling is unlike anyone Jack has met…but she’s his employee. Unwilling to give her up, Jack makes Sterling an offer she can’t refuse—for four sexy weekends, he’ll indulge her most wicked fantasies with no professional strings attached. But will mixing business with pleasure spell disaster? Or will they find the recipe for satisfaction?

Thoughts: Recipe For Satisfaction had me in its grips as soon as I heard Jack Vaughn, tattoos, and a tongue ring.

Brazen books are always books that I can never put down until I finish because you instantly fall in love with the chemistry between the characters. I just live for those instant connections when you can sense the sexy sizzle right from the start. When you see two characters where love just slowly creeps up on them without either of them realize it's happening. That is Jack and Sterling. They both have their own lives and their own troubles yet somehow in between all of that they find comfort in each other where they both thought neither of them needed. I absolutely love Jack's playfulness and the fact that he cooks and then on the other side Sterling has her head on right with her job and I give her so many props for what she deals with in her personal life.

Overall, Recipe For Satisfaction is yet another Brazen book that I could not get enough of. It's a fun, seductive, quick read with so many real life qualities. And believe me, I definitely wanted to get my own taste of Jack Vaughn's tongue ring!

Vanilla On Top By: C.J. Ellisson

Synopsis: Discover your inner bad girl, and set her free…

Heather Pierce is done being a wallflower, both personally and professionally. Desperate to live a different life for one night, she attends a speed dating event. Maybe here, anonymous unless she chooses otherwise, she can become someone new. When a man way out of her league sits across from her, Heather gathers her courage and takes charge of what she wants, secretly fearing he won’t desire the real person she’s desperate to hide.

Top acquisitions officer and international playboy Tony Carmine is about to close the biggest deal of his career. But then he meets Heather at a speed dating event…and discovers losing control may be exactly what he needs. Her blossoming sensuality occupies his every thought, consuming him with the need to possess the most intriguing lover he’s ever encountered—until he walks into the boardroom and sees Heather on the other side of the negotiating table.

Thoughts: This book had me swooning right in the first chapter. Vanilla On Top oozes sex and love all in one. Brazen Books are hard not to love and here's yet another book that proves it. With Vanilla On Top you find yourself loving the characters as soon as you meet them, fanning yourself from the hotness, and then smiling with joy in the end.

I absolutely love how strong Heather is and how much stronger Tony makes her. Your significant other should do that for you, they should be there to be behind you and make you a better person. I think Tony and Heather both do that for each other. Yet on the other side whenever they're in a room together, or even just texting, they literally light on fire with chemistry and sex. You cannot help but love these two together and the sacrifices they make for each other.

If you've read Brazen Books before, Vanilla On Top is another one to love. Hot, hot, sex is basically three words I'd basically use to describe it. Yet, it's a fun and lovable story too. If you love these books like I do, and want to read about a bold woman in charge and a sexy, rich playboy to go along with her... pick this one up you won't be disappointed!

Book Blast: Daynight

daynight by Megan Thomason

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

Full of competing agendas, romantic entanglements, humor, twists and turns, daynight is Megan Thomason’s debut young adult dystopian novel and first in the daynight series.
