Blog Tour: Salt

Author: Danielle Ellison
Release Date: January 7, 2014
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find "her" demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

- Interview With Carter -

Carter, Carter, Carter... Heh I just like saying your name. Any who! Welcome to Shortie Says, so stoked to have you here!! ;)

Glad to be here, Shortie. I like your nickname.

Ooooh, thank you :)... like yours too ;).

1. So, blue? Out of every color converse why blue?

You know, I'm not hugely drawn to blue or anything. I was going to buy some simple black and white ones, standard, but there I was in the store and I kept coming back to them. Black was the safe bet, and I don't do safe bets, so I bought them. It's good to stand out.

2. What's it like being a witch? Or warlock I guess? You have a favorite thing to do?

I'm a witch, and a guy. That's one thing the Non-magical world likes to distinguish, but not us. It's one of the weird ways our community is hypocritical in our standards, but that's another conversation. What's it like to be a witch? It depends on the person. It's pressure, standards, rules, but it's also fun. I have magic, so that's what it's like. My favorite thing to do...Honestly, aside from the magic and demons, I'm just like you. I like to be outside: hiking, kayaking, biking.

UGH! Kayaking is so much fun! I loves it!

3. What did you think when you first met Penelope? Was it luuurrrve at first sight?

When I first met Penelope she was standing in an alley trying to expel a demon. At first I thought she was nuts, but she was determined. That's why I stayed and watched her. I knew something was off and I thought, "what can this girl do now?" And she pulled it off. Love at first sight? I wouldn't say that. I will say that I was immediately intrigued, and then once I got to know her, it was pretty obvious that she was special.

4. Since you love going to that coffee shop, what's your favorite type of coffee?! Mines a cinnamon dolce latte mmm, we should go out sometime! ;)

I like Americanas with a little bit of sugar. Sometimes, I'll drink that iced. Yours sounds sweet--I'm not a cinnamon fan. *laughs* We could have coffee sometime, but my girlfriend can be pretty scary. I bet you could give her a run for her money though.

I bet I could give her a run for her money ;). I like Americanas too!

Lightning round!
- Tongue Rings or Eye Brow piercing? Neither
- Expensive car or a sports bike? Car
- A fun night out or a romantic night in? Both :)
- Boxers or briefs ;)? Briefs

Thanks for stopping by Carter!! Come back any time! I mean it. Any. Time. Maybe we can do a little magic together. ;) ...okay that was lame. Just get your cute butt back here some time!

Anytime you want me, Shortie. Anytime. I aim to please.

- About The Author -

Danielle Ellison is from a small town in West Virginia. She spent her childhood pretending to fly and talking to imaginary friends. When she grew up, she finally flew away (in an airplane) and started traveling the world. She hasn’t stopped yet, but someday she may decide to settle in one place. Her real life friends would definitely like that; they would probably also like if she stopped talking to her characters out loud.

SALT comes out in August 2013, and then it's sequel. In October 2014, FOLLOW ME THROUGH DARKNESS (book one of the BOUNDLESS Trilogy) comes out. She's got a busy few years!

Review - The Last Best Kiss by: Claire LaZebnik

Anna Eliot is tired of worrying about what other people think. After all, that was how she lost the only guy she ever really liked, Finn Westbrook.

Now, three years after she broke his heart, the one who got away is back in her life.

All Anna wants is a chance to relive their last kiss again (and again and again). But Finn obviously hasn’t forgotten how she treated him, and he’s made it clear he has no interest in having anything to do with her.

Anna keeps trying to persuade herself that she doesn’t care about Finn either, but even though they’ve both changed since they first met, deep down she knows he’s the guy for her. Now if only she can get him to believe that, too....

I absolutely adored Epic Fail by Claire LaZebnik, so when I was browsing Edelweiss and saw The Last Best Kiss I knew I had to see what it was all about. I instantly fell in love with the synopsis and could not pass up a chance to read it. Let me just tell you, it completely stands up to all the standards I held it to. I literally could not put this book down, all I wanted to do was know what would happen next. The Last Best Kiss is just one of those perfectly adorable and angst filling contemporaries that leave your heart happy in the end.

We've all been in a position where Anna has been. Where you do something because of society or peer pressure even if it's something you don't want to do... even if it breaks your heart. I felt for Anna and related so many times throughout this book. My heart broke for her multiple times, but yet I loved where she ended up. All of our characters definitely started at one place and then ended up somewhere new at the end and I loved it. Which moves me to Finn Westbrook. Gosh, who doesn't love a nerd turned hot story? I loved Finn as soon as we meet him... Scrawny, glasses, and all. Then to watch him keep all his intelligence and personality but add new looks and new traits to his personality... so hot!

I love how the author weaves more than a romance story though. It's a coming of age story, it's being confident in who you are, it's about family, and sexual orientation, and trust all wrapped up into one heart melting story you won't be able to put down. Absolutely loved!

Author: Laura Howard
Genre: New Adult Fantasy
Series: The Danaan Trilogy #1
Published: April 28, 2013

Allison O'Malley's plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she's been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison's mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn't trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother's sanity.

Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and other girly novels were routinely devoured in single sittings. Books took a backseat to diapers when she had her first child. It wasn’t until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.

Review - Fireblood by: Trisha Wolfe

To save a kingdom, Zara must choose between a prince who could be the answer and a rising rebellion that threatens to take control.

When Zara Dane is chosen to marry Prince Sebastian Hart, son of the man who ordered her father’s capture, Zara knows she must fight to save everything she loves from ruin.

Being betrothed to the prince means a life trapped behind the towering stone walls of the Camelot-forged realm. Under the watchful eye of the prince's first knight, Sir Devlan Capra, changing her future becomes difficult.

When an unlikely rebel reveals the truth about the deadly secrets that fuel King Hart’s twisted world, Zara’s path to rescue her father becomes clouded by deception. The Rebels clear her path by forcing Zara’s hand with an ultimatum: sway Prince Sebastian to join the Rebels, convincing him of his father’s evil nature, or they will take him out.

But Zara is uncertain about a future under the Rebels’ command and where the prince’s heart truly lies. She must decide who to trust, what to believe, and what she’s truly fighting for before the king destroys all of Karm, including her heart.

I admit, this one took me a little to get into and I had every intention of knocking it a star, but now after finishing... I cannot see giving it anything less than 5 stars. Once I hit a certain point, I could not put it down. The world building is so unique in the sense that it mixes futuristic with historical. The romance is intense and sexy. And, the action explodes in every chapter.

I really enjoyed all of the characters in this story, even the bad ones. Our protagonist definitely had a heck of a ride in this book. From starting out as a commoner who wanted nothing to do with anything, to becoming someone so much strength. I love watching characters grow an change through out a story and Zara is a fantastic example of it.

On the other side, man oh sexy man... Devlan Capra. His name is HOT. His dark hair and pale blue eyes totally stole me. His strength and fights and intenseness just completely won me over. I absolutely loved Devlan. From the beginning all the way to the end, his role was played perfectly. I loved the changes we got to see him and well just everything about him. Definitely 100% new favorite book boyfriend.

Overall, I loved Fireblood. I absolutely love the fact that it's futuristic but actually set in an older time period. That Wolfe keeps the romance just as hot as I like it without simmering it down. That the fights are intense and wicked in every way. That there are parts that make you cringe and parts that make you want to fan yourself, and parts that make you laugh. Fantastic book and I will definitely be reading the next one!

Book Blast + Giveaway: A Breath of Frost

Alyxandra Harvey, popular young adult author of the Drake Chronicles, Haunting Violet, and Stolen Away, is back with a bewitching new young adult fantasy series that will take readers through the streets of magical 19th century London. A BREATH OF FROST, the first installment in The Lovegrove Legacy (published by Bloomsbury Childrens) goes on sale January 7, 2014. It’s full of witches, magic, family secrets, goblin markets, deer-people, and boys in cravats!

An Introduction to Moira from A BREATH OF FROST

• Moira
• Age: 18
• Hair: black
• Eyes: grey
• Familiar: orange tabby cat called Marmalade
• Magic: The soles of her feet itch to warn her when she is in danger.

Moira wants nothing to do with the fancy folk of the Beau Monde.

And she wants even less to do with the Order of the Iron Nail.

She just wants to be left alone to run magical errands for One-Eyed Joe in the Goblin Market and run about with the other Madcaps. To be a Madcap is to be a free witch, to owe no one fealty, least of all the Order who have the power to trap your magical familiar in a witch bottle. Moira has spent her entire life avoiding them…until the night all the gargoyles in London fly away.

Suddenly the Greymalkin Sisters are loose in London and killing young witches, and One-Eyed Joe sends Moira to help three desperate debutante cousins who drag Moira right in the middle of the Beau Monde…and the Order.

Excerpt 1: Moira

All around her came the cracking of stone and the splintering of shingles. She could hear it even over the clatter of carriage wheels on the street below, the restless horses in the stable, and an orchestra playing music for the fancy folk. They danced while overhead, the magic they didn’t even know protected them, broke.
Gargoyles of all shapes and sizes, all sneers and smiles, deserted their posts. A few crumbled to dust but most—too many—launched off roof points, dormer windows, and rain spouts. They took to the air, the stretch and flap of their wings leathery and brittle. They shed cast off pieces of shingle and stone all over London. Moira had never seen anything like it.
With the gargoyles gone, the rooftops weren’t safe.
       London wasn’t safe.

In 1814, three cousins—Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope—discover their unknown family lineage of witchcraft when their individual magical powers unexpectedly begin to manifest. Now, beyond the familiar manicured gardens and ballrooms of Regency London, a dangerous, alluring underworld available only to those with power is now open to the cousins.

But by claiming their power, the three cousins have accidentally opened the gates to the Underworld. Now ghouls, hellhounds—and most terrifying of all, the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters—are hunting and killing young witches for their powers. And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders … because she keeps finding the bodies. Can the cousins seal the gates before another witch is killed …or even worse, before their gifts are stripped away?

“Harvey balances a large cast with an intricate plot with flair….A successful blend of Regency and paranormal romance.” ~ Kirkus Reviews

“Filling her latest with a large cast of characters— from the society elite to the magical world’s dark underbelly—Harvey keeps up the action and clever dialogue as the protagonist, Emma, deals with high-class mean girls, familial secrets, and a confusing crush. A smashing blend of adventure, fantasy, humor, romance, and historical fiction.” ~ Booklist

About the author:

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who
are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.

Among her favourite books are ‘The Wood Wife’ by Terri Windling, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she’s smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.

Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.
