Scorched Skies by: Samantha Young

Synopsis: The White King has crossed the line, sounded the horn, sent out the wolves.

When blood is shed and life is lost the reality of Ari’s position as both hunter and prey finally sets in. It seems her father will stop at nothing to force her will to his own and distracted by Charlie’s latest mistake and her seemingly misguided attraction to Jai, Ari never thought to fear anyone else but the Jinn King.

Blindsided and attacked, Ari learns a new wolf has joined the hunt. A dark sorcerer believes he knows a way to bleed the power of the Seal and wield it as his own, and he is even less patient than The White King.

The War for the Seal has only just begun… and it’s time for Ari to turn it on its head.
It’s time for Ari to stop acting like the hunted.

It’s time for Ari to become the hunter.

Thoughts:  Just wow. The uniqueness, realness, and thrills that Samantha  brings to this series always seem to blow me away. I adored this installment from beginning to end!

*Spoilers for Smokeless Fire below*

We start off right where we left off in Smokeless Fire. Ever since coming back from the hospital, Ari's dad is different and still very much reserved. Charlie is now a scorcer and trying to get Ari's attention. And Jai is still her body guard... and only that. When someone close to Ari is killed, the trio soon figures out that Ari is being hunted by a dark sorcerer. Everything Ari has ever known changes so quickly, and she is thrown into the Jinn world even more now. But, Ari isn't weak. And it's time she turned the tables and hunt those who are trying to destroy her.

Goodness, I heart this series so much. Taking an adventure with a concept that is new to you is always so engaging and enchanting. With Scorched Skies, you're taken even more into the lore of Jinn that you may or may not know much about. And I love how Samantha kept switching view points. Sometimes from Ari, sometimes from Charlie, sometimes from Jai, and sometimes from other characters! And, even if it doesn't say "Jai", she does it in a way where you instantly know what characters eyes we're looking from and I loved it.

As always, I fell in love with our characters all over again. I'm so proud of Ari in Scorched Skies. The way that she takes control, is so strong, yet can still break down when she needs to. I even adored the way she handled the boy situation. Speaking of... Charlie is still that misguided, broken boy that I wanted to save. In Scorched Skies, we finally see the change that we always wanted in his feelings towards Ari. And I love Charlie, I really do... even If his priorities are sometimes not in the right place. There's just something about him, unf! On the other side is, Jai. Sexy protector that I adore! I absolutely loved that Samantha showed us his world in this book. Especially Trey! Oh my goodness I LOVED him! Send me a Trey ASAP!  But back to Jai, each book you can just feel his love for Ari and you want to hit him for holding it back. Because, as much as I love Charlie, Jai is the one for Ari. He's the one who will love her completely and be there to protect her. You can't help but fall for him.

Overall, I was SO completely and totally happy with book two in the Fire Spirits series. And, I thought the ending was perfect! It was so satisfying, yet still thrilling and leaving you wanting the next one! One of the things I love is that Samantha doesn't wait until the final book to give you everything you're hoping for. And who knows what she'll have to offer in her upcoming books, but I know I'll be getting them as soon as they release!

____________
 - This or That With Kale! -
(Oh yeah ladies [and gents] KALE)

Spend the whole day with Alex or with Dez's dad?

*Thinks about it for a long minute, then smiles*
As hard a choice as it is, I’m going to say Alex. A whole day might be enough time for me to convince him to leave Dez alone… It would certainly be fun to try.

Shortie Says: As long as you don't touch him... I'm still gunning for him you know. I think I can shape him up. ;)

Mozzarella Sticks or Pizza?

They’re both very good. Gooey, Dez calls them. I suppose I like gooey. But out of the two, I like the fried cheese sticks better. The Pizza comes with broccoli when Dez gets it. It’s green. I don’t feel like food should be green…do you?

Shortie Says: Broccoli on PIZZA? WTH Dez are you trying to poison Kale?! Just kidding... I like broccoli sometimes. But tip for you Kale, try your pizza with pepperoni or bacon... mmm so yummy!

If you could change your power: reading people's thoughts or telekinesis?

I would take anything over what I have now… If I had a choice though, I would like to read people’s thoughts. Sometimes I wonder what’s going on in Dez’s head...

Shortie Says: I wish I could read thoughts... just imagine...

Rain or sunshine?

Both. Is it possible to have them at the same time? Because that would be nice…

Shortie Says: Yeah it totally is! Tell Dez to show you a rainbow! ...Or I will. ;)

Do you like the day time or night time better?

I like the sun.  But I like the stars, too. I suppose I like them both the same. That’s okay, right? There’s no rule against that? There seem to be a lot of rules… I can’t keep track.

Shortie Says: You can make up any rules you want Kale. I'm enjoying watching you do it (as I'm sure a lot of others are as well). Truly. :)

Since you're busted out of Denazen... Would you rather go to the beach or the mountains?

I’ve never been to the beach, but Dez tells me I’d like it.
*Kale leans closer*
I’m not sure, though. Something about having to be barefoot so things can ooze between my toes?

Shortie Says: GO GO GOOOO. You will love it! The beach is one of my favorite places.

On Dez: dark hair or light hair?

I liked it when she dyed it darker—but it was pretty when it had the colors in it, too. Really, it doesn’t matter...although I do like purple. I wonder what it would look like if it were purple…

Shortie Says: Oh! Purple is a fav of mine too!! TELL HER TO DYE IT! I would like to see it purple too!

Anything else you'd like to tell us Kale? Any secrets? ;)

*Kale leans forward again. He looks to the left, and then the right*
I really don’t like Alex… You do, don’t you? Maybe he should stay with you for awhile…

Shortie Says: Just send him my way baby. We can kill two birds with one stone. If you catch my drift ;).

Thanks for stopping by Kale!! Come back any time! ...I mean it. Any. Time. :)

Defiance by: Shelly Crane

Synopsis: In the third installment of the Significance series, we begin with Maggie and Caleb in the clutches of a new enemy; the Virtuoso council. Not only do they have to deal with the consequences of taking the lives of the Watsons and the council attempting to take Maggie away to keep their precious Visionary safe, but they must deal with Marla as well. All are determined to undermine, control and use Caleb and Maggie's rare gifts for their own uses, some wish to destroy them entirely. Then Maggie's father and Bish are threatened but the council forbids the presense of humans. Peter and the family fight and stand beside them every step of the way to save Maggie's father, to keep Caleb and Maggie together when the corrupted council is so set on keeping them apart and to stop Marla and whatever she has up her sleeve. Then Maggie has the shock of her life when she discovers something about her real father. It may change everything for everyone. Stay tuned as the story continues.

Thoughts: I never get tired of getting lost in Caleb and Maggie's story. Each book, throws them more curve balls, yet lets them grow even more. Defiance is most definitely a page turner that has everything you could ask for.

Defiance picks up right where we left off, Maggie finally gets to put her Visionary title to use while meeting the whole Vituoso clan in London. But, things are never easy for the Jacobson clan. Not only does Maggie now have a new enemy, she needs to win everyone over and learn how to lead... without getting killed of course. Add Caleb to that list and the fact that whole council is against the couple leads to one eventful and thrilling adventure.

Shelly has a way with this series of making you love every minute of the story. It doesn't matter whether it's a thrilling part, an exciting part, a sexy part, or a sad part... there's always something to enjoy about it. It's the same with the characters. Watching Maggie and Caleb continue their relationship through all the hardships just melts your heart. I want me a Caleb, asap! And even both families (Maggie's and Caleb's), are so understanding and so supportive of everything. Remember Rodney? And the evil Watson's? Don't worry they're all back in this fantastic installment as well!

Overall, Defiance is a brilliant continuation of the Significance series. Shelly throws us new curve balls while keeping all the old thrills right under the surface. There's smiles, tears, and as always an ending that always has me wanting more!

- The Book -

Synopsis: There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Pure by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Thoughts: If you stalk me anywhere, you know that Jennifer's books are like my drugs... and I am completely addicted. When I won an early copy of Pure from Jennifer, I almost fell out of my chair with excitement. She in no way let me down, if anything she raised her bar even higher for me.

I feel like my review will be a complete gush fest. I'm not sure how Jennifer always manages to do that to me every time I read one of her books. But, Pure kicks off where we left off in Half-Blood and Seth is way more in the picture now even though Alex is still very much head over heels for Aiden, the super sexy forbidden pure blood. But, Alex's life can never be easy, so when daimons attack the Covenant everything is thrown into chaos once again. The threats just keep on being thrown at Alex, along with two sexy guys, a secret danger and trying to learn about being an Apollyon. Bring on the chaos.

Alex still stands as one of my favorite main characters, ever. I adore her determination, her strength, her power, the way she loves, the way she can have a snarky remark for everything. She's very much her own person and comfortable in her own skin, who wouldn't want to be like her?

Then there's our boys... Seth and Aiden. I have to admit Seth definitely grew on me in Pure. He's... well we can start off with sexy. But, he's also so cocky and has the best lines ever. I'm constantly laughing. But, more than that, Seth does have a genuine interest in Alex that really cares for her. With all that being said... my heart still belongs to Aiden. If I could bundle him up and steal him away... oh gods I would. The way he would and does sacrifice everything for Alex just completely melts your heart into a puddle. Totally and completely Team Aiden. One other thing I have to mention about the boys... the scenes between those two had to be some of my favorites. Those two will make you pee your pants of laughter or swoon of sexiness when they're in the same room! I adore them.

Pure, the next installment in the covenant series, is nothing short of something made from the gods (pun totally intended). With its seductive moments, heart-wrenching thrills, laughs, and everything in between, Pure will sink into you and keep you trapped within it's brilliant words. Throw away EVERYTHING you think about sequels because it's one of those books where you simply cannot put it down.

Falling in Love at 17
Falling in love is easy. Staying in love … more complicated.
At 17, life is about new experiences. It is about self-discovery, friends, adventure, mistakes, career and university choices. And let’s be honest, there are not many 17 year olds out there that aren’t interested in falling in love.

But how many are truly interested in falling in love with THE ONE at 17?

I’m not sure I was. In fact, I probably wasn’t. I was planning to take the world by storm – solo. So when I met Matt, well, actually … it was pretty darn amazing. But it was a little frightening too.

When we first got together, it was sweet and young and … perfect. I was head over heels. But things became complicated quickly. He was an up and coming athletic star and I was working in hospitality. So basically he worked hard in the day, and I worked hard at night. His lifestyle demanded routine and healthy living, mine … not so much. But we were determined to make it work.

Falling in love so deeply at a young age made it difficult to be as reckless as our friends. We watched them coast in and out of short, fun, but meaningless relationships and it just seemed so different to what we had.

Writing the Embrace series has been an opportunity for me to pour some of the incredibly intense emotions of young love into Violet’s story. It has been important for me as a writer, and a person, to recognize that it’s completely realistic for someone at her young age to experience the full effect and heartbreak of love. Violet is one hundred percent invested with her heart. She makes bad choices, but we have to. She regrets many of her decisions, because we all do. And she fights for what she loves, because she is compelled to. Violet’s story is unique to her, I don’t pull on parallel scenarios from my own life, but I do pull on the emotion of intense love. Love that I think adults sometimes forget that 17 and 18 years-olds are very capable of feeling.

I often find one question helps a lot of adults, who maybe disagree with this view, to be more open minded: Do you remember you first true love? Do you ever wonder what your life would’ve been like if you had stayed together? For some, the answer is a resounding NOT INTERESTED, but for others … the pause says it all.

Matt and I celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary in March - I believe jewelry is in order ;)

Embrace is a completely unique angel story. And, I'm sure you haven't read anything like it. When I got Embrace my first thoughts were "Ohh, heavenly!" but honestly Embrace is the completely opposite. It's thrilling and emotional in almost a dark way and I adored it.

Synopsis: It starts with a whisper: “It’s time for you to know who you are…”

Violet Eden dreads her seventeenth birthday. After all, it’s hard to get too excited about the day that marks the anniversary of your mother’s death. When angels seek vengeance and humans are the warriors, you could do a lot worse than betting on Violet Eden…

Thoughts: Embrace is a completely unique angel story. And, I'm sure you haven't read anything like it. When I got Embrace my first thoughts were "Ohh, heavenly!" but honestly Embrace is the completely opposite. It's thrilling and emotional in almost a dark way and I adored it.

Losing your mother the day you're born isn't easy to cope with. Finding out you're half angel and half human, well lets just say Violet is constantly getting curve balls thrown at her. She thought her life with her father, her best friend, and Linc was going as well as it could be. But now the secrets are out. Violet has been lied to, getting a strange tattoo on her wrist, meeting a mysterious stranger who seems to know her and well, she may have no choice to where her destiny lies.

I absolutely adored how each character is presented in Embrace. Violet is the protagonist who definitely doesn't have it easy, especially after discovering the truth about herself. And even though she sometimes is misguided, she's strong. She's completely loyal to those she loves. She fights for what she believes in and I honestly cannot wait to see her kick some butt in the future. With Violet, I also loved her relationship with her father and her best friend, Steph as well. Everyone needs a best friend like Steph!

Then there's the boys that we all love. Let me start off with saying that I am Team Linc, but he's not the only boy in the picture. Phoenix plays a vital role in Embrace. Is Phoenix sexy... heck yes he is! Did I completely understand where he was coming from... of course I did. You can tell that underneath his confidence he has his own demons, but that still didn't make me Team Phoenix. So.... Linc. I think I fell in love with Linc the moment he was introduced. I love his age, his name, his green eyes, his protectiveness of Violet, the way his eyes pierce hers. Even though there's some hurting going on, Linc always has Violet's best interest at heart and you cannot help but fall in love with him! I need me some more Linc!

Jessica takes her story and gives her angels a twist in the dark and powerful direction. Don't get me wrong, there's still light and dark but, there seems to be so much anguish in this story. I honestly love reading books like this. There's adventure, forbidden aspects, temptations, thrills, tons of emotion, more than just kissing (high five Jessica!), an amazing set of characters, and overall an enjoyable story. Cannot wait to read book two, Enticed, and see how Violet's story continues.

Goddess Interrupted by: Aimee Carter

Synopsis: Kate Winters has won immortality. But if she wants a life with Henry in the Underworld, she'll have to fight for it.Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans. As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.Henry's first wife, Persephone.

Thoughts: Goddess Interrupted is an emotional drainer, that's for sure. I honestly felt as if one moment I was up and the next I came crashing down. Aimee knocked this sequel out of the park. I think it's even better than the first!

We start off with Kate returning to Eden Manor from her six months away with James. Kate is instantly thrown into the chaos of the underworld and the cold shoulder from her husband, Henry. But, after a powerful evil threatens all she loves, Kate decides to enlist the help of the last person she wants to see... Persephone. Welcome to the world of the Gods, Kate.

I really enjoyed The Goddess Test, but Goddess Interrupted blew me away. The way that Aimee has modernized all of the ancient Gods, is just phenomenal. But, that's not all Aimee succeeded in doing. This book, I promise you, will pull at your emotions. The angry ones, the jealous ones, the happy ones, and everything in between. It's one magical and thrilling journey.

Every characters also grows in some way. Whether it's Kate showing more of her strength and growing into her role of living in the Underworld. Or if it's learning something about the characters we already know and love. Which I admit, I fell even more in love with Henry and James in this one. I may have hated them both at some point in the book... but came back to adoring them. I told you... emotional roller coaster! That brings me to mention Persephone. I went into this book knowing, or at least expecting, I'd hate her. And, I will say at some points I wanted to kick her in the shins. But, over all you really cannot completely hate her. She plays a vital role in Goddess Interrupted and it's just yet another thing to love about the story.

Overall, I loved this story. There's so many perfect quotes. There's a cute dog named Pogo who I love! There's so many emotional strings pulled while Kate is on her thrilling journey. And, there's even twists and turns and sexiness I wasn't expecting but absolutely loved every moment! The ending of Goddess Interrupted is definitely a stunner and it's obvious that I cannot wait to read The Goddess Inheritance!

Rachel Hawkins and Ally Carter Signing!

I have to start off by saying I've never read an Ally Carter book. I've wanted to... but haven't. And after meeting her and seeing how hilarious she is, I know I need to!! I loved meeting both Ally and Rachel, they both clicked so well. They were constantly making us laugh and I loved how they interacted with the crowd!

So here's some fun facts from the signing!

____________

- They ended up getting off the wrong train stop. Definitely thought they might die in the Philly train station bathroom. But alas all was figured out and they were safe!

- What advice would you give to a young writer?

A: Marry Rich! Just kidding. Read a lot, write a lot, and don't worry about getting published.

R: Read a lot. Figure out the stories you want to tell.

- Did you know the ending of your story?

R: Kind of didn't. She knew where she wanted Sophie emotionally, but didn't exactly know how she'd get there.

- Ally is working on Heist Society #3 !

- The Estate in Demon Glass is based off Chatsworth House in the UK.

- Rachel hates scrivener!

- Neither Ally nor Rachel need a specific place to write. Ally likes to get out and write then can go home and relax when she's finished.

- Rachel was an only child so she tends to write them. She mentioned when she sees siblings fight she's like "Whhhhy?".

- How did you know you wanted to be a writer?

R: Played super intense barbies. Her stories were WAY better than her friends Barbie's stories! She also played pretend a lot.

- Favorite Books?

A: To Kill A Mockingbird. She loves how in every different phase of life you read it, it's different.

R: Matilda. The Perilous Gard. Game of Thrones.

____________

Synopsis: On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.

Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Awesome RIGHT?! I cannot wait to read this one!! :)

- Excerpt -

Alessandra jerks back like I just suggested she prance around the square naked or something. “No! I believe I understand your meaning, and Lorenzo is certainly not my suitor. He is like a brother to me—the three of us grew up together.”
She resumes walking and I fall in step beside her, understanding there has to be more to the story. And as we near the end of the row, I finally ask, “If you’re not into the guy, then what’s the problem?”
At that same moment, a rich, deep chuckle hits my ears. My stomach involuntarily clenches and my gaze sharpens on the back of this mysterious Lorenzo.
Alessandra sighs. “That is the problem.” She places her hand on my arm and solemnly looks me in the eyes. “You must be careful. Lorenzo is beautiful, and it is not uncommon for a girl to walk away from meeting him with a piece of her heart left behind. But he is just eighteen, and not yet ready for marriage.”
I roll my eyes and laugh, then realize she’s serious. “Yeah, I assure you, there’s no danger on my end. I’m not exactly looking for marriage myself.” Because that would be crazy-town.
Alessandra wrinkles her nose as if she doesn’t believe me, but she removes her hand. We close the distance and Cipriano flashes me an open, honest to goodness, lighthearted smile.
“Lorenzo, this is the cousin I was telling you about.”
Slowly the guy turns and I fall head first into the richest chocolate-brown eyes I’ve ever seen. He blinks and long, luscious lashes feather across his bronzed cheeks. I can feel myself gawking, but I physically can’t drag my eyes away. Lorenzo doesn’t smirk or act all conceited, either. He simply stares back, his eyes casually skimming over me, causing my skin to warm and break out in a whole body tingle.
Time seems to stop, and the sounds of the market mute. Alessandra was right. This boy is beautiful.
And he’s looking at me.
