Shadows by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis: The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Thoughts: Shadows has to be one of the best novellas I've read. Maybe it's because I love Jennifer L. Armentrout. Or, maybe it's because her writing always blows me away. Could it be that I somehow always relate to her stories? Or maybe it's the fact that Daemon and Dawson are sexy as heck! To be honest, it's probably all of them wrapped up in one.

Shadows starts out with the family we all know and love Dee, Daemon, and now Dawson Black. The last thing Dawson expects is a beautiful brown haired, brown eyed beauty named Bethany to waltz into his life, but he cannot deny his attraction to her. And she cannot deny the intense feelings she feels for him. As the two delve into their relationship, secrets and danger are revealed.

I loved this story from beginning to end... even knowing what the outcome will be. Even then, you're still hoping that Jennifer has something up her sleeve, that she'll surprise you some way and be like JUST KIDDING! And even seeing the ending coming, it doesn't soften the blow because Jennifer has a way of making you fall in love with each and every character she writes.

And I truly did love them all. Dawson, is just like Daemon but sweeter, more reserved, less strict. He's a character where you love reading his voice watching his story. It's the same with Bethany, you cannot help but love her! And the fact that she's into art = major win points with me! Oh oh, and Dawson's blow up with Andrew = life made (LOVED that scene). It was also refreshing to see all the characters we know and love already too (Adam, Dee, Daemon... I, err don't, cough I guess Ashley too).

It's no secret that I have loved Jennifer's books from the moment I read an ARC of Half-Blood. And I KNOW I will continue to buy and fall in love with all of her stories. If you haven't read any of her work, 1) You're crazy. Just sayin'. And 2) This book would be a fantastic place to start. Meet the characters, fall in love with them and then jump into the Obsidian series head on!

Shooting Stars by: Allison Rushby

Synopsis: Meet Josephine Foster, or Zo Jo as she’s called in the biz. The best pint-sized photographer of them all, Jo doesn’t mind doing what it takes to get that perfect shot, until she’s sent on an undercover assignment to shoot Ned Hartnett—teen superstar and the only celebrity who’s ever been kind to her—at an exclusive rehabilitation retreat in Boston. The money will be enough to pay for Jo’s dream: real photography classes, and maybe even quitting her paparazzi gig for good. Everyone wants to know what Ned’s in for. But Jo certainly doesn’t know what she’s in for: falling in love with Ned was never supposed to be part of her assignment.

Thoughts: Shooting Stars is a quick, fun read with a unique concept and unexpected twists. I truly enjoyed reading this one.

It makes me quite happy when I think I know how a story might turn out, and it doesn't. If I think I know what the unexpected twist is going to be, and it's not what I thought at all. Yet, I was still completely happy with the story and how it ended. Shooting Stars is one of those stories. There's so many fun moments and fantastic morals throughout this book. It has a unique concept where our main character Jo is a paparazzi. And, we also get to see some celeb life. Combine all that with a coming of age story, some romance, and even some laughs and you get yourself a fun, enjoyable story.

Also, I loved taking the journey and growing with all of these characters. They all grow in their own way and all come to realize things about themselves. Even family seems to play an important role in both of our main characters. And, family is important me, so I loved that aspect.

Overall, I think this book covers such a wide age group that readers all across the board will enjoy. If you're looking for a fun, quick read... Shooting Stars is it!

Lauren DeStefano Signing!

So tonight in Collegeville, PA I got to meet (hang out) with Lauren DeStefano for the second time! It ended up being more a signing than an event, but that's okay! I stayed and chatted with her for a little while and she's one of the nicest, down to earth authors you will meet! If she stops by your town, you should definitely go out to meet her!! Also, here's a few fun facts I learned tonight!

- She has 3 cats!

- If she could meet any author she'd pick T.S. Elliot. Lauren also said she'd love to meet Stephanie Meyer or J.K. Rowling to talk to them and see how they deal with everything thrown at them.

- When she needs to get away from writing she watches tv or surfs fun websites like fail blog... she also mentioned the "cat eharmony video" ---> you should all watch this http://youtu.be/mTTwcCVajAc

- I asked about Cecily, and she says she was surprised at the all the attention that she got as a side character. And that we'll just have to wait and see how she turns out in book 3 !

- Also, I heard her telling another fan at the signing that she knows where the end of the book is, but she doesn't always know how to get there. So it's fun to discover it along the way.

- Speaking of book3, no title yet! But, she has seen an early draft of the cover. I cannot wait until we get to see that! I adore her book covers! :)

- With the writing aspect, she says (paraphrased), you can't think of being rejected or think about how you're going to get published while you're writing. Rejection always happens. And you need to write the book you love.

- Told her I loved Silas from Fever! Lauren mentioned that she got a lot of great feedback on him even though he's not a love interest.

So whenever I love a book, I always buy like 5 copies and then give one away and HORDE the rest. Just kidding haha! But, I do always do giveaways for the books I love! And Fever happens to be one of those! And yes, it's a signed copy! :)

Accordance by: Shelly Crane

Synopsis: In the sequel, Maggie learns much more about all the strange things that happened to her, and has to face new ones. She rebels against it, but ultimately, must face it for her new families sake and maybe even her life. Bish went from being her biggest supporter to her biggest pain in the butt and Kyle's intentions to attract her interest may not be so innocent. Caleb and Maggie face many new obstacles together and fight to work through them but will one that should be a good thing be too much for Maggie to handle?

Thoughts: Accordance was just as captivating as the first. I love how Shelly continues Caleb and Maggie's story and makes you fall in love with them all over again.

*slight spoilers for the first book*

We pick up right where Significance left off with Caleb, Maggie and unfortunately Kyle and Bish in California. The happy couple just wanted some time to get away from all the danger and just breathe for a while, but they've got another thing coming. Kyle still loves Maggie. Bish still doesn't like Caleb. And now, Maggie has discovered something new about herself, something that may change the Aces for good. And just when all that is going on, more danger starts to find Maggie. But, she still has her loving significant, Caleb, and they'll fight like hell for their happiness.

I really adore this series. It literally makes me sigh with happiness all the time while reading. I love how strong of a protagonist Maggie is and I love how Caleb, the sexiest hunky ever who plays guitar and can cook and can surf and is just adorable (shutting up now), is always there by her side through every step. It's magical watching the romance grow between them. It's also so easy to love every character in this story. Both families and friends. That brings me to Kyle. I like his character a lot and even though I'm happy for how things ended in Accordance for him, I was also kind of disappointed. Anyone else feel that way? Or am I the only psycho? Ha!

Even the villains... you don't sit there hating them, you sit there enjoying the havoc they cause. Speaking of, the ending of this story was pleasantly a surprise. I wasn't really sure what the climax and the dramatic ending would be for this book but, it wasn't what I thought. I sat there saying to myself "huh, didn't see that one but it definitely makes sense and I definitely would like to slap that person". Shelly did a fantastic job of changing up villains and I can tell we're in for a different and roller coaster of a ride in Defiance.

There's always this advice being thrown out by authors saying "write the book you'd want to read". And I very much agree with that statement. That being said, I think Shelly Crane does just that for her readers. These books have everything I can ask for. Spell-binding love, music, drama, a dog, fights, family, magic, friends you adore, tattoos, and everything in between. I am so happy that Defiance comes out in the next month!

Cover Reveal: Inbetween

Hey lovely readers! So first, let me start off by rambling (as always). I love Tara Fuller! She's such a sweet person and her book Perigee Moon is amazing (find my review here)! Her writing as seriously become one of my favorites! So, of course I am STOKED to help reveal and give an excerpt of her book Inbetween! Well lets all stare at it!

___________

INBETWEEN (Kissed by Death, #1)
By: Tara Fuller

Synopsis: Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s
life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving
“accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so
Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling
in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who
makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate
has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him
hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn't let her die before,
and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves
from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the
only thing he has left…his soul.

So personally, I think it's hot. And the color scheme... AH I LOVES IT. And the synopsis?! CAN. NOT. WAIT! Oh and if you think you're dying after those two... wait until you read this excerpt below! ;)

Chapter 1

Finn

Sometimes Emma made me feel so alive, I almost forgot I was dead.
      Almost.
I sank down onto the side of her bed, amazed by the blazing wildfire that swept through me whenever Emma was near enough to touch. I took a deep, unneeded breath, and settled down on my side next to her. The mattress didn't sink. The springs didn't groan with the weight of an extra body. The distance between us was an impossible void. Inches that might as well have been miles. Miles that left me wanting in so many ways that I ached.
Even the sun couldn't resist her. Its glowing rays caressed her skin, and stained her hair the satiny color of summer wheat. Before I knew what was happening, my hand followed their lead. Cells ignited. My skin burned, screaming with the agonizing need to touch--
“What do you think you're doing?”
I jerked my hand away just as Easton melted up from the polished hardwood floor beneath the window. Like an oil slick coming to life, he unfolded his long, shadowy legs until he was just an ink blot against the square of tangerine sunrise behind him. His violet eyes pinned me like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
      Which, I kind of was.
      “Nothing,” I lied.
“Yeah, looked like nothing.” He strolled across the room accompanied by a wave of sulfur and smoke, the black serpent tattoo on his neck glinting. “What were you planning to do, recite her poem? I swear to God, if you were still alive I'd confiscate your man card.”
I ignored the barb and scrunched up my nose. “Jesus, Easton. Don't they have a shower somewhere between here and the afterlife?”
“Screw you. You didn't just have to tow somebody's grandpa to Hell.” He brushed something chalky and grey off of his cloak and a shudder worked its way down my spine. God only knows who or what it belonged to. “Besides I wasn't the one about to feel up a sleeping human.”
      “I wasn't--”
“Save it.” He waved his hand. “We have work to do. I don't have time for your useless obsession with the human today.”
“Will you please stop calling her that?”
“What?” Easton glanced up from Emma's vanity, where he'd been inspecting the various lotions and bottles like he was on some alien planet. Then again, Easton had been dead for something like four hundred years, so all of her stuff probably was sort of alien to him.
The human. You make me sound like a freak. It's not like we're a different species for God's sake. We were humans, too, or don't you remember that far back?”
      Were. Past tense.”
We could have gone back and forth like that for hours, but the call came. It always did. It started in my bones--a cold so cutting that it sliced through me like a machete. When I looked up, Easton's jaw was clenched, his muscles taut and ready. He slowly closed his hand around the handle of his scythe that burned black and softly smoked at his side. I flexed my fingers as the icy ribbons of death worked their way through each one of my limbs.
“Can you take this one for me?” I asked. “You're already going to be there, and I just got back--”
“No,” Easton said. “Hell no. I have my own job to do. I can't keep covering for your sorry ass. Besides, you're already on thin ice with Balthazar. Don't push your luck, Finn. Just keep your nose down, collect your souls, and thank the Almighty that you don't have my job. Now let's go.”
“Yeah, but…” My eyes returned to Emma. Sleeping. Perfect. Safe.
“For the love of God. She'll be fine, you pansy.” Easton clamped a hand over my shoulder and dragged me from the bed.
      “How do you know?”
      He shrugged. “I don't.”
With that he vanished, consumed in a flash by the keening wails of the damned. The screams beckoned. Clawed at me from the inside out.
Rule one as a seeker: Death doesn't wait for anyone.
And it sure as hell wasn't waiting for me now.

***

ARE YOU DYING YET?! Because I am! After reading this excerpt I think my reaction was something along the lines of "holy mother of jesus I need this book YESTERDAY and I need to meet Finn ASAP."  Yep, basically. I hope you all loved this reveal as much as I did. I'll be slowly dying while I wait... or maybe I'll just die so Finn can come reap me! ....just kidding (not really).

Synopsis: For Natalie Miller, it’s just another family vacation. For someone else, it’s the opportunity he’s been waiting for.

With only a single peck from a guy named Frank, Natalie’s anything but experienced with boys. But when Todd pops out of the water, says hi, and tells Natalie he has leukemia, all of that changes.

She’s never had attention like this from a boy, let alone one who’s a real charmer with sex on the brain and the experience to match. Drawn to Todd like a magnet, Natalie gives him her friendship, her love, and her body. Even when she’s tempted by gorgeous, healthy schoolmate Alex, Natalie’s desire to love and care for Todd pushes her to see how far love can go in spite of the potential for death of the relationship — and death of the one she loves.

- My Review -

This is one of those books that when you finish you kind of just sit there and wallow in how loaded the story actually was. I was completely satisfied when I finished but I was still doing the whole "jaw-dropping-wow-that-book-was-moving" emotion as well. A Place In This Life is not light by any means. It will pull at every single one of your heart strings. It's completely moving, emotional, and extremely raw.

Coffee or Tea?
Coffee, which I'm having right now. Stong, dark Military style coffee. With half-and-half.

Invisible. I've always been big on stealth because it allows me to come and go without fuss.

Noise or Silence?
White noise. Oh, and The Weather Channel makes great background noise for writing.

Mac - born and raised with Steve Jobs. I started on a Mac Classic (the little one from way back when).

Manicure or Pedicure?
Pedicure, because I have Dracula feet. Going barefoot has its privileges, and its downfalls.

Eyes. They tell you everything about a person.

Paranormal or Contemporary?
Contemporary. The scariest, most moving stories are the ones that really happen in our lives.

Texting. I am an introvert - INFJ to be exact - so I'm a happy camper if I can type it.

Stuck in a broken elevator or stuck on a broken ski lift?
GOD NO! No to both! I am terrified of elevator problems. Ski lifts are too high up. Pass!

A Place In This Life by: Julie Rieman Duck

Thoughts: This is one of those books that when you finish you kind of just sit there and wallow in how loaded the story actually was. I was completely satisfied when I finished but I was still doing the whole "jaw-dropping-wow-that-book-was-moving" emotion as well. A Place In This Life is not light by any means. It will pull at every single one of your heart strings. It's completely moving, emotional, and extremely raw.

We start with Natalie Miller, and her normal family vacation. She expects it to be boring, but then she meets Todd. And he's not like anyone she's ever met. He's outspoken, good looking in a non-conventional way, a complete bad boy, and well he has leukemia. As her emotional relationship grows with Todd, so does their physical relationship, but cancer doesn't stop for anyone. Then she meets her locker-mate Alex. Alex is gorgeous, and sweet, and obviously into her.  With two completely opposite boys, cancer, and emotions running haywire Natalie will have to make a choice and be strong enough to stick with it.

I knew right from the synopsis that this book was going to be an emotion drainer. I knew that my heart might potentially break. But, oddly enough, those feelings are what make me love a book. Each of these characters gets put into such a dark place at times. To watch them all struggle and learn and grow is magic in itself. Especially Natalie. She's one of those protagonists who start somewhere in the beginning of the book and end somewhere completely different at the end, but in a strong I-was-so-proud-of-her way.

There's so many touchy topics that Julie has put into this book in such an exquisite way. She weaved things like first loves, sex, cancer, family problems, and so many more in such a way that has you pulling yourself chapter after chapter to know what will happen next. Also, I have to admit the book didn't end exactly that way I expected it to and that always pleasantly surprises me in the best ways. Granted, my heart was slightly broken and my emotions where shattered all over the place but I truly enjoyed this story.

A Place In This Life is a truly eye-opening and emotional roller coaster of a story. One that will definitely stick with me.

Side Note - There's two quotes that I absolutely fell in love with and I'm not quite sure why. But after I read them, I knew what was coming and the words just seemed to have so much wisdom in them. It just stuck with me.

"When I was in high school I saw two boys at once and it got pretty complicated."
Now my eyebrow was up. "Really? How'd it work out?"
"One broke my heart... and the other is your father," she said with a smile.

and

"You are, right now, the most interesting person in my world, and just about the only one who gives a damn about how I feel. I want to be close to you, as close as I can get, because life is worth living when you have someone to life for."

Breathless Tour - Collegeville Stop!

__________

So, I was SO ecstatic when I found out that the Breathless Tour coming to eastern PA. And, not only once, but TWICE! And the Collegeville stop was only 5 mins from my house... I was basically happy dancing. Just sayin'.  I absolutely adore all of these series, so I was so so happy I was able to attend!

Basically I'm going to rant about the signing! Pictures. Author sayings. People who were there. And I may even give a book away.... who knows! ;)

__________

Candid!

So first, here's a few candid shots of the authors in the beginning! You'll have to excuse these shots... I was in the back and I'm not tall. :)

Jessica and Andrea!
(Ooooh look LA fitness in the bg. I used to go to that gym. But it was so darn expensive. So I dropped it. HA)

Marie's Head (Sorry!) and Beth!

They we're also talking at this point and answering all the questions we had! This is going to sound so weird but I loved all of their voices. (Is that weird?!) I felt like I could listen Andrea Cremer talk forever. Then there was Jessica who had the most adorable voice! Oh and Beth... other than making us constantly laugh, I love the southern accent in her voice! And finally Marie! She was so easy to relate to and you could hear the passion in her voice when she talked about her book. I loved them all!

So here's some random things I jotted down that the authors said! It's kind of para-phrased in my words and I added my own comments :).

- Lot of the authors want to cast Ben Barnes for their wish casts for their books!

- Beth: She uses people she knows for her minor character's names. And, the people she kills off in her books are actually old students of hers.... their names I mean!

- Andrea: Pictures Chase Crawford as her Shay! HECK YES. I am totes okay with that. I mean I am Team Shay :).

- Marie: The closest actor to Day is a young Leonardo DiCaprio with some Asian blood! Hot!

- Marie: Used to be an artist for a video game company. And when she's distracted from writing she draws her characters! Which I think is freaken awesome considering I adore art. Check out her Deviant Art Here!

- Andrea: Wise words: "You actually have to finish a book." She says, if you want to be a writer you actually have to sit down and write a whole book and not just write idea after idea. I loooove this advice! Because I'm one who tends to idea after idea.

- Beth: Wrote 10 books in 10 years and had tons of rejections until she got a yes! Never give up!

- Marie: Speaking on Movie rights - you have to be okay with your book being made into a crappy movie. Even movies that aren't so great are just like a "2 hour book trailer". Even the worst movies boost book sales! ...See there's always a positive!!

- Beth: Sees Molly Quinn as Amy!

- Beth: Her next book is a "Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds meets Game Of Thrones"!

- Andrea: Her next work is based in the fifteenth century!

- Marie: She does have another book in the works, but can't tell us much more than it's a Sci-Fi!

- I FEEL LIKE I HAVE NO JESSICA IN HERE! I'm sorry JESSICA!! -

- Jessica: Was the only one of the four to say if she had to be something (parents, friends, significant other, etc) to her characters... she sees them as her friends!

- Jessica: Said she didn't intend for Sachi and Rory to have as big of a role as they did and Andrea also added to this saying she loves when characters she doesn't intend to become a big part of the story actually do. They tend to become her favorite.

- Beth: Says "She doesn't see YA as a reading level but more as a style of writing."

- All the authors agree YA is more of a "coming of age" story.

- Jessica: Said she was writing book2 and was killing off a character (OH NO THAT SCARES ME!) and she said she felt bad about it.

- Beth: On the other hand, laughs wickedly when she kills off characters. She likes our tears.

- Marie, Jessica, and Andrea: See their characters first then write the plot.

- Beth: Writes her plot first then fits characters in.

- Andrea: All her characters names have special meaning.

Okay I think I've given you enough inside! ;) What do you all think about those things?!

Cover Love #26

Gravity
By: Melissa West

Expected Release Date: October, 2012
Goodreads!

Synopsis: In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed--arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

So, I cannot freaken WAIT for this book! Firstly, I love anything by Entangled... they're basically the bomb. Second, Melissa West is awesome (seriously, go stalk her twitter). Next, the cover is AWESOME. And finally, well THAT synopsis is killer! It sounds suspenseful, sexy, and well just down right awesome. I cannot wait to read it!

Severance by: Shawn Kirsten Maravel

Synopsis: Severance is the bone-chilling, adrenaline-filled sequel to Volition. Charlotte finds herself hoping against reason that her life couldn't really have taken the devastating turn that it has. With Joel still dangerously out of the picture, and no signs that he may ever come back, she finds herself up against an even more dangerous threat. A sexy and cunning threat that is bound to tear what she has always known to be her reality down for good.

When things finally start to look up, another curve-ball is thrown her way, promising to give her what she'd hoped for since meeting Joel, an answer it seems that came a little too late. What Charlotte thought she'd once known to be the truth filters through her fingers, leaving her to believe that her world and the afterworld are much more tangled than she'd originally expected. She comes to find that love and lust are no longer the sole deciders of her fate, but revenge. A lifetime of secrets unfold and Charlotte discovers that Joel hasn't been the only one watching over her all of these years.

Thoughts: In the sexy and thrilling sequel to Volition, Shawn Kirsten Maravel has created a book that's sure to make readers happy.

*spoilers if you have not read book 1*

In Severance, we pick up right where Volition left off. After sacrificing himself, Joel is still in the hospital and fighting for his life. And, Charlotte's old boss Alex seems to be getting closer than ever to her... to the point that might be freighting. So when a surprise comes that makes Charlotte thinking things may just be looking up, everything actually takes a turn for the worse. Charlotte realizes she will have to fight if she wants her happily ever after.

I enjoyed Volition, but I loved Severance. See, reading about a main character who is 23 really drew me in from the start. Brett over at Demons Read Too, brought up a fantastic point that our age group like the 20-25/college age is a really under tapped market. So, I was so happy that Shawn took the story where she did and she can because these things happen to us young adults!

Character wise, I adored watching Joel and Charlotte's story continue. It's so amazing to see a love so strong, and how no matter what they both continued to fight. Then there's Alex, whom I loved in the first book, and honestly still loved in this one. In a twisted way, I could see where he was coming from and I understood.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic little series the Shawn has written. I love the age group it portrays. I love the college and work aspects. I love the romance and the slight paranormal thrown in there. And all the morals weaved in. I was extremely happy with the ending and I think this a series many readers would enjoy!
