Unspoken by: Sarah Rees Brennan

Synopsis: Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met . . . a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her childhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.

But all that changes when the Lynburns return.

The Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the-Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her imaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?

Thoughts: I couldn't have imagined an ending like the one Sarah Rees Brennan has just broke my heart with.  I was begging Kami, falling harder for Jared, wanting all the torture to stop. I was so hopeful, and then very end was just a shot through my heart. Overall, this book is so different from anything I've read. If you want a romance... this isn't it. If you want something light and fluffy... this isn't it. If you're looking for something dark and mystical... well this may be it. It has a very older time period feel to it. Very gothic yet magical and I loved every adventurous moment of it.
Kami Glass has always had a connection with a boy named Jared. The two have always communicated to each other, being each other's support and comfort. Living in a town like Sorry-in-the-Vale, has never been easy for Kami with all the hidden secrets. Then the Lynburns return to town... a family famous for basically "ruling" the town and keeping its secrets. Kami immediately takes an interest in the family and strange and scary things starting to happen. It's then that Kami also meets Jared Lynburn and realizes that he is her Jared and the connection between is real, not imaginative. But, now being face to face can she trust the boy that's always been in her head? Or is there more going on in Sorry-in-the-Vale than she ever could have imagined?
When I say this story is unlike anything I've read... I meant it. Our protagonist Kami is strong. She believes in what she believes in and never backs down no matter how frightening the circumstances may be. She has a wicked sense of humor and she has no problem being independent. Her strength was so admirable through-out Unspoken. Then there's her friends Angela and Holly. Angela isn't your typical best friend but her and Kami get each other, and that is what's most important. I ended up loving Angela. That leaves me with the boys... Ash and Jared Lynburn.
We meet Ash first, and Ash is every girl's fantasy basically. He's got blonde hair, blue eyes, tall, yet at the same time there's something non-cocky about him. Something that makes you like him and want to get to know him. Ash was definitely a roller coaster of a character for me. I loved him and then hated him, loved him then wanted to kick him but in the very end I decided I still loved him and am curious to see what happens with him in future books.
Jared Lynburn. This boy... this rugged boy.  Brown leather jacket, not black! Dark blonde locks. Blue eyes. Drives a motorcycle. Has tortured thoughts. Jared was insta-love for me. There was something haunting about him that pulled me into him and wanted to know more. Something that screamed "love me" and I did right away. I was rooting for Jared and Kami so, so hard in this book. As I said in the first paragraph this story isn't a romance, yet the connection between Kami and Jared is so different than anything else. It was torturous, heart-breaking, yet so incredibly strong. "I'm always on your side."
Sarah Rees Brennan has a talent for creating wit and magic. She has the power to make you fall in love with the story and then tear your heart in two. The town of Sorry-in-the-Vale is so eerie and I adored traveling through it. It's easy to see that I am dying for book two. If you like dark tales, I highly suggest picking up this one. It's brilliant.

  1. OMFG JENA!!! YES AND YES! WE ARE SO ON THE SAME PAGE! We were so tortured and devastated and basically stabbed with that crazy ending. I CAN'T EVEN!! Dark and Mystical is exactly what this book is! And AH! I completely agree that this is not a romance, at least not really. Not on the surface, but somehow Jared and Kami's connection is just so deep. You described Kami, perfectly! She's so independent, she can totally handle herself and I loved that soooo hard. Like I said on Twitter, you just understand my love for Jared Lynburn! Wasn't he just amazing? Gosh, I totally insta-loved him too! Right when he appeared, I just knew. I just knew. LOVE OF MY LIFE JARED <3 Oh, Ash. Yes. I definitely had the same reaction. I liked him too and then everything went down and I wanted to punch him in the face and then OH MY, I even waned to kiss him silly! lol. I adored Angela too. Her banter with Kami was hilarious! Oh Jena, I love your review for this. SO HARD, LIKE WOAH. You always write the best reviews! *sigh* You'll need to hold me up for the year we're going to have to wait for the second one! HOW WILL WE SURVIVE? HOW WILL I SURVIVE WITHOT JARED FOR A YEAR!?

I LOVE YOOOOU JENA. Amazing, brilliant, well-though out review. <3

  3. I saw your tweets about this book but didn't know exactly what book it was. Now of course I want to read -__- I read the synopsis a loooooooong time ago but it didn't piqued my interest, but of course, from everything you described now I sure want to read now. Especially because is dark and mystical and I love the way you described their relationship " It was torturous, heart-breaking, yet so incredibly strong."

P.S: I love your reviews so much, is not even funny!! You should write books!! ;)
