Waiting On Wednesday #8

Title: Cursed
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Expected Release Date: September 18th, 2012
Add it: Goodreads

Synopsis: Dying sucks--and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not've been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

Teaser Tuesday

This week comes from Cold Kiss by: Amy Garvey (Review Here). This is a bittersweet story that I really enjoyed. Two teasers...The first one: a part I liked way too much. And, the second is well, what you would call a teaser.

_______________________________

"Let me go."
Three simple words, and yet they stand for everything I haven't been able to do since he died. Grief and regret flood through me, and it's like trying to walk away from the wind - I can't escape it, so I let it slam into me instead.

***

I love those lines so, so, so much. God, aren't they just so perfect? Ugh.

I don't even move when Danny turns and finally sees me again, the storm of memories clearing and simple horror replacing them. For a moment that seems as fragile and weightless as a soap bubble, he just stares as I stand there, my hands clenched, tears streaming.
Then he charges.

Cover Reveal: TOUCH by: Jus Accardo

This cover is so amazingly sexy I'm not even going to waste any time....

Synopsis: When a strange boy tumbles down a river embankment and lands at her feet, seventeen-year-old adrenaline junkie Deznee Cross snatches the opportunity to piss off her father by bringing the mysterious hottie with ice blue eyes home.

Except there’s something off with Kale. He wears her shoes in the shower, is overly fascinated with things like DVDs and vases, and acts like she’ll turn to dust if he touches her. It’s not until Dez’s father shows up, wielding a gun and knowing more about Kale than he should, that Dez realizes there’s more to this boy—and her father’s “law firm”—than she realized.

Kale has been a prisoner of Denazen Corporation—an organization devoted to collecting “special” kids known as Sixes and using them as weapons—his entire life. And, oh yeah, his touch? It kills. The two team up with a group of rogue Sixes hellbent on taking down Denazen before they’re caught and her father discovers the biggest secret of all. A secret Dez has spent her life keeping safe.

A secret Kale will kill to protect.

Giveaway: Banned Books Week Hop

Hosted by: I Am A Reader Not A Writer & I Read Banned Books.

___________________

So, what's your opinion on banned books? Here's mine:

A lot books have been challenged and my guess is by parents or teachers who do not want their children reading books they do not believe is suitable for them.

I completely understand that there are some things... sex, drugs, curse words, just to name a few... that parents or other adult figures don't believe their children should be reading. But, why?

I totally understand not letting a 10 year old or younger reading something with those topics... but if the child is a teenager... WHY NOT? I'm sorry, I understand that parents are trying to keep their kids shielded, but this is a completely new world. Technology is virtually everywhere. And the teenagers nowadays are even being called the "Technology Age", and I promise you they can find and DO find these topics everywhere.

Sex happens. Alcohol happens. Drugs happen. Cursing HAPPENS. It's basically everywhere, and just because a teenager is reading about it doesn't mean they're going to be like "Oh hey look this character drank and had sex a lot, I think I'm going to go do that!" What most teenagers, at least they should, get out of a story with these topics is that they are unhelpful. A lot of books have morals showing that alcohol and drugs are NOT a good way of forgetting about things, because the problem doesn't disappear that way.

With the lines of sex. I don't condone this... but sex is happening younger and younger these days. And if you are a parent or a teacher... if your kid wants to have sex, unless you chain them to their bed and lock their bedroom door or monitor them 24/7, they will find a way to do it. The best thing *I* think you can do is talk to them about it. Be a friend to your kid so that they are comfortable coming to you about these things. Let them read about it so they see the benefits and or consequences of their actions.

Also along the lines of sex, it could be because I'm 21, but I love seeing sex in books... when it's appropriate for the story of course. It makes the book that much more real for me. I'm not the type that believes in "waiting for sex until your married". Personally, I think if you're with a significant other for a long period of time, completely comfortable with each other and want to share that love... I say go for it.

I completely understand that parents, teachers, and authority figures are just trying to look out for their youth. But I don't think banning books and taking their choice away is the right answer.

Remember, these are just *my* personal opinions, coming from a 21 year old. So please don't bash me. I'm not a mean person, I'm just giving you some of *my* insight and opinions about these topics since they are the main reason why some books are challenged. If you'd like to comment and let me know your opinions I will happily read them. But, I will not start a debate. I don't want a fight. If you have nothing nice to say, then please do not say it, or e-mail me and I will respond in private.

Cold Kiss by: Amy Garvey

Synopsis: When her boyfriend, Danny, is killed in a car accident, Wren can’t imagine living without him. Wild with grief, she uses the untamed powers she’s inherited to bring him back. But the Danny who returns is just a shell of the boy she once loved.

Wren has spent four months keeping Danny hidden, while her life slowly unravels around her. Then Gabriel DeMarnes transfers to her school and somehow, inexplicably, he can sense her secret. Wren finds herself drawn to Gabriel, who is so much more alive than the ghost of the boy she loved. But Wren can’t turn her back on Danny or the choice she made for him—and she realizes she must find a way to make things right, even if it means breaking her own heart.

Amy Garvey’s transcendent teen debut is perfect for fans of Shiver and Beautiful Creatures. Wren’s unforgettable voice and story will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

Thoughts:  Heart-breaking and emotional, Cold Kiss is a unique story that will make each part of your heart ache yet, show you that there is a way to overcome tragic events.

Wren is devastated when her boyfriend, her first love, Danny is killed in a car accident. When she decides she'd do anything to have him back, she uses her powers, ones she doesn't know much about, to bring him back from the dead. But, instead of the Danny she knew and loved, she find herself with a cold, distant Danny... not her boyfriend she once knew. Hiding Danny from the world seems hard enough, but when Gabriel shows up, being like her and sensing her power, she begins to realize that keeping Danny here may have been the wrong thing to do. But, after losing her love once, could she be strong enough to do it again?

Each page of Cold Kiss is heart shattering. Even in the semi-happy parts you can feel the chill within the words. It's an emotional book which is meant to teach you something. That sometimes, your emotions take over and you make the wrong decisions, but you have to be strong enough to set them right. That, just because you've lost something so significant that was such a part of your life, doesn't mean that you won't ever find it again. Cold Kiss shows that sometimes you have to make the wrong decision to realize how to come out on top again.

Amy Garvey does this in a beautiful way of using Wren, our lead character. Wren has powers, powers that she doesn't know much about because her mother tries to hide them. She uses them anyway to bring back Danny because she's overwhelmed with grief. I liked watching Wren grow. She goes from this I-can't-lose-you to I-can-learn-to-move-on type of girl, and I enjoy watching characters who come to realize that.

Then we have Gabriel. Who to say the least, has had a rough life. I loved his character. He keeps such a good head on his shoulders, yet is strong and smart. His caring side is what gets to you. Not only is he cute with blonde hair and gray-blue eyes, but he's always willing to help. To be there for the people who mean something to him and I love that about a boy.

Overall, I think Cold Kiss is a moving story. Literally, about learning to let go and move on. That things happen for a reason, you shouldn't be able to change it, you just have to learn to appreciate what you had when you had it and then accept your new future.

Waiting On Wednesday #7

Title: Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles #1)
Author: Jessica Spotswood
Expected Release Date: Feburary 7th, 2012
Add it: Goodreads

Synopsis: Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they're witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word . . . especially after she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren't safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.

Unwind by: Neal Shusterman

Synopsis: Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.

The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.

________________________________

Thoughts: Compelling, thrilling, and eye-opening, Unwind is sure to be a story you won't ever forget.

Unwind is told from the prospective of many characters, but the story revolves around Connor, Risa, and Lev. Connor gets in fights, was outspoken, and well wasn't supposed to know he was getting unwound. Risa, is in a state ward. She plays piano and is pretty intelligent, but she has reached her potential, and her only option now is to be unwound. Lev is a tithe. He knows he's being unwound and is happy about it... he believe it's his purpose. By some fate, these three meet and have escaped being unwound. But, for how long? Is trying to survive, almost being killed better than having yourself torn in pieces bit by bit?

Could you imagine living in a word where your parents/guardians could sign a form to have you unwound? Unwinding is almost like organ donating, except being unwound means they use every piece of you. They take you apart bit by bit and you have no choice in the matter. Unless you are disabled or over 18, your parents can sign you away like it's nothing. All choice in the matter is completely taken away... how would you want to live in a world like that?

There's a huge question that is constantly brought up in Unwind. Would you rather be unwound knowing that every part of you is still alive and in use in someone else? Or would you rather be dead? It's such a tough question. Also, keep in mind that Unwinding only happens in seventeen and under kids! We get a first hand look with Cyrus of how you would "live on" and I've got to say it's scary, almost schizophrenic-like. I think personally, I'd choose death. At least killing myself would be my own choice.

I truly loved Connor and Risa's characters in this story. They are both so strong, and smart. I loved watching them grow, and change. In the beginning of Unwind they are completely different characters than they are at the end. That is something I completely admire. Chapter 58 I loved - just had to throw that out there! :). Then, there is Lev. In the beginning I must admit, I thought Lev was a complete twat and I would have dropped his ass so fast. But, by the end of the book I ended up growing to really like him. He finally found his place and what was meant for him and I believe he made the right decisions.

One last character I must mention is Roland. If you've read this book or plan on it... Chapters 59-61 killed me. They revolve around Roland and even though his character is an ass, I would never wish this on anyone. I seriously cringed the whole way through them. I could NEVER imagine being unwound. It's those chapters right there that hit you in the gut and turn this book from great to unbelievable.

Unwind is an unforgettable, and thrilling story.  I don't know where Neal Shusterman came up with it, and I'm not sure I want to know. But he created one hell of a story that is definitely worth reading.

*Special thanks to Lauren over at Ravishing Reads for letting me borrow this! :)

The Gorgeous Cover and Synopsis

Synopsis: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Isle Of Night by: Veronica Wolff

Synopsis: Is life offering fewer and fewer options? Then join the dead.

When Annelise meets dark and seductive Ronan, he promises her a new life-if she has the courage to chance the unknown. Now, she's whisked away to a mysterious island and pitted against other female recruits to become a Watcher-girls who are partnered with vampires and assist them in their missions. To survive and become a Watcher, Annelise has to beat out every other girl, but she's determined to do so, because to fail doesn't mean dishonor-it means death.

_____________________

Thoughts: Unique, thrilling, and intense, Isle Of Night, takes the term "bad-ass beauties" to a whole new level.

Annelise just wants to get away. From her crappy town, her abusive family, and her high school. And then tall, dark, and handsome with memorizing green eyes shows up and offers it to her. Ronan promises her a whole new life if she's strong enough. She's reluctant, but accepts. What she finds is nothing like what she expected. Annelise finds herself amongst hard core beauties and want-to-be vampires... not to mention real ones too. But, it comes at a price. Annelise must fight to become one of the few select "Watchers". And little does she know, she will be fighting for her life.

Isle of Night is like a Hunger Games filled with all girls, and no "boyfriend" to push Annelise through. The whole story is thrilling. There's a chill, a death, and some blood around every corner. The fighting is intense and Annelise is a beauty with brains, but also incredibly strong. It shows you that having brains is just as good as having looks. You'd especially need witty comments if you had to room with Annelise's roommate Lilac. She's a tightly wound fireball (literally), with a cold, crazy heart. But, on the other side Annelise has two friends whom I loved. And they are Emma and Yasuo. They are both easy-going, yet strong and smart.

Next, this book doesn't really have any "romance" per say. There is some definite chemistry and sexual tension, but no physical romance. But, that being said I didn't hesitate with the book at all because it doesn't need it. The story line itself is so strong that it does perfectly fine without it. I have to admit I loved Ronan though and I just wish something a little more happened with him and Annelise. Though, I understand why it didn't.

Isle of Night was a suspenseful read that I enjoyed, and I am eagerly awaiting book two, Vampire's Kiss.

My Soul To Keep (Mini) by: Rachel Vincent

Synopsis:  Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And so is someone else…

____________________

Thoughts: This series gets better and better as it goes along! This installment was so gripping and seriously I think related to the real world and what teens are dealing with. As for Nash, I really don't hate him... I think everyone deserves to be forgiven and deserves a second chance. I do however feel really bad for Kaylee throughout this book. The poor girl can't win. On the other hand, TOD. YOU MY BOY!! :) On to the next one... :)

My Soul To Save (Mini) by: Rachel Vincent

Synopsis:  When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn't wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can't cry for someone who has no soul.

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad's ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend's loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can't possibly understand.

Kaylee can't let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….

Thoughts: So this is probably going to be a rarity, but I actually liked this one better than the first. The adventure kept my eyes glued to the story every second I got a chance. Well, I do like Nash don't get me wrong, but I really like Tod! :) unexpected kisses on the cheek please!

My Soul To Steal (Mini) by: Rachel Vincent

Synopsis: Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.
See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.
And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

Thoughts: I'm kind of in awe almost. So many thoughts and emotions are swirling around in my head like Nash put them there... Haha ;). My soul to steal was favorite in the series by far. I read this in one day, and I'm so glad I did (though I didn't have a choice, I couldn't help myself I HAD to keep reading). Each character has really become comfortable in their skin and they all amaze me. I was really surprised how things turned out, good surprised. Well, for the boys. I still adore Tod. I really love him. But, I have to say... I don't hate Nash. And I'd be happy with whoever Kaylee ends up with. I honestly cannot wait for the next one! I'm so darn excited :)!

Cover Love: Insurgent

So the cover for Insurgent by: Veronica Roth was released today! And you ready?!? ....

Isn't it GORGEOUS?!?!!? That tag line = KILLER.  I love the coolness of the colors, the light blue and mossy green! It's just so PERFECT. And the faction sign is Amity: The Peaceful, but that TREE looks so whipped. And I love how the leaves are blown into each other, some autumn looking, others spring looking. It's so so, so BEAUTIFUL. I am SOOOO excited for this book! Beyond words! What are your thoughts?!
