With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister's war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
Thoughts: The synopsis truly explains it all. When I finished this book, I had no words. I'm surprised, and heartbroken, and curious all wrapped up into one. Cassie has 100% kept up with Clockwork Angel, and believe me when I say I will be begging and clawing my way to get Clockwork Princess because I simply need it. I feel like I need the third book to hopefully pick up the pieces of my torn mind (and possibly heart) off the floor.
After finding out Charlotte may lose the institute if they do not find the Magister, the whole team sets in motion to complete the task. Along the way though, there is mysteries, shocks, darkness, hope, love, and betrayals. There are also new characters we meet along the way and I have to admit, I loved each and every one.
Lets talk about the three main ones, shall we? Jem, Tessa, and Will. Jem will shock you in this installment. Though he's still his kind-hearted self he becomes bold and brave in Clockwork Prince. I am positively certain Jem fans will be EXTREMELY pleased with him. Then there is Tessa. Oh Tessa... as much as I love her, I do not envy her. She goes through so much in this book. She is thrown into dark situation, loss, fights, and discoveries. And, when she was torn apart...so was I. And finally that leads us to Will. Now, many people say "This is Jem's book!" and I can see where that comes from, but honestly I feel like this is slightly Will's book in a way. Who Will is in the beginning of this book, he is not necessarily the same at the end. He has so much strength in him, and the things he does for the people he loves is remarkable. He is changed, and I found myself falling more and more in love with this dark blue-eyed beauty of a soul. Each of these three characters grow so much in Clockwork Prince and I am SO anxious for Clockwork Princess.
There are the characters we know and love of course too. I must start off with Charlotte and Henry. I really adored them in Clockwork Angel, but I found myself loving them in Clockwork Prince. One scene in particular just stole my heart away for them! We all know Gideon joins the Infernal Devices crew as well... and I honestly loved his character! I loved the role he plays and every scene he was in! Plus... his middle name!!! :) Oh yes, Jessamine is back in full swing as well. Finally, one more I'll mention is Magnus... he always plays the best roles. Whether it's comical or sincere, his mix into the characters is always perfectly placed.
I honestly am not sure what even to say about the plot except my initial reaction when finishing the book was bittersweet. I felt shocked and hopefully and heartbroken and full of wonder all in one. I'm not going to lie and say this book will make you jump for joy (though some parts may), because this book is dark. There are mysteries I believe we have only just saw the surface of and I will be dying slowly until I can uncover them in Clockwork Princess.
And I leave you with two things... 1) Is it noble to do something even though your heart isn't in it? Is it okay to do something you think is right when your heart burns for something else?
And second, a non-spoilery quote that I fell in love with... "We live and breathe words. .... It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them. Reading your words, what you wrote, how you were lonely sometimes and afraid, but always brave; the way you saw the world, its colors and textures and sounds, I felt - I felt the way you thought, hoped, felt, dreamt. I felt I was dreaming and thinking and feeling with you. I dreamed what you dreamed, wanted what you wanted - and then I realized that truly I just wanted you." -PG 468 CP ARC
